First time bike commuting to work

Today was the first day I biked to work! I was so excited.. I haven't biked to work since my paper route when I was a kid.

I live in Marina Del Rey, CA and work in Santa Monica so I took the South Bay Bike Trail up into Santa Monica then hit Broadway all the way up Cloverfield. I mapped it out and it's 6.5 miles, but I think there's probably a more direct route then going West on Washington and winding all through Venice.

I'm reborn to biking since I lived in Manhattan for 7 years and didn't ride a bike the entire time. I love reading these forums and getting tips on how to bike commute. Thanks everybody for all your posts!

Welcome....you are officially hooked!

The shortest route is often not the best. For me, the fastest by car is 10 miles, the shortest by biking is 5.5 miles. The fastest by bike is 6.8 miles (but isnt as fun because of the traffic). My favorite route (due to lack of traffic/lights) is 7.3 miles and is just a bit slower than the 6.8 route.

Enjoy the ride home!

Very cool. I ride from Redondo to Marina.

Maybe you could take Speedway through some portions of that?

Congrats! I agree with nbac23 that the shortest route isn't the best... and the South Bay trail is so pretty I would gladly trade my 3 mile route for yours!

It's probably out of your way, but I occasionally rode my roommate's bike on the Ballona Creek trail to South Bay trail when I was working in MdR a long time ago.

Thanks for the support guys!

CMY, I am so new to the area that I didn't even know about Speedway until you mentioned it. I google mapped it and am going to check it out for part of the ride home.

I agree with you guys... I'm so lucky to have the South Bay trail on my commute and it would be a shame to waste it. Maybe a combo of the two would be good.

Sincewednesday, I've heard of the Ballona Creek trail, but never ridden that... I'll check it out this weekend!! Thanks for the great tip

Welcome back! Enjoy the exercise, the food -- you are going to find that if you do 14+ miles per day you are going to be consuming mass quantities -- and the ride!
