wind

Undoubtably a topic that has been covered many times...

But, why is it, when I ride to work in the morning (going east), the wind is from the east, and when I ride home, it's from the west?

I figure, a few weeks of riding my Trek with the giant knobby balloon tires 7 miles each way into a 10 mph wind (in 25 minutes), I'll either be dead, or ready for the BRAT.....

Along the coast if you are heading inland in the morning you get an off shore breeze due to the cooler land and then in the afternoon the wind reverses to an on shore breeze as the water is now cooler than the air. This phenomena is often restricted to within a mile or two of the coast.

I have no explanation for Memphis which does not have a large body of water near it (If my recollection is correct)

It's a conspiracy hatched by Big Oil - they have found a way to manipulate the wind to discourage people from seeking alternate, fuel-free forms of transportation.

Here it has to do with Lake Michigan..... Just like law4jba said, but with the lake.... I hit a headwind every witch way I ride

The Mississippi River, but I don't think its large enough to generate that effect 7 miles out.

That is the case for me here in Montreal, too. Very occasionally, the wind will stay consistent throughout the day so that I have a fast ride either to or from work.

Same here in Cleveland. There is almost always a wind coming in from Lake Erie. I hate that wind more than the cold and snow!

Many localities have winds that shift on a regularly daily pattern.
For example where I commute:

Same here (but coastal winds might account for it)!

I even try changing routes, with no relief! I think mama nature sees what I'm up to and sends the wind my way (or opposite of my way as it is....!).

I find the same wind direction changing thing but I live east and work is west. Tailwinds both directions! Rockin cool. Of course if I'm late for work I'm guaranteed there's a slogging tough headwind.

Just started commuting in April and typically we have a light east wind in the morning when my commute is 80% eastbound and a 10 - 25 mph west wind in the late afternoon when my commute is 80% westbound. Some days it is tempting to use the wind as an excuse but I actually feel better after fighting it on the way home.

wind...to me, it would be proper to call it FlatHills. I do my best to repeat 'free workout'freeworkout' while gasping into the occasional headwind. Other times (winter) I loudly curse and whine a bit...

I just thought I'd say that it is always really a bad sign when you think you're going into a really strong wind but then you look at the trees or grass at the side of the road and they aren't moving at all.

good thing here is that there's an west to east wind all the time. Never changes directions significantly.
