Gearing / Weight Question

Bike selection question.

I am currently riding my old Schwinn Frontier MTB (approx 30-35 lbs) with a triple crank 24-34-42 with rear cassette 13-20. My ride includes some hilly areas (14 mi each way). I struggle, but make it through, with some of the hills. I am looking at a Motobecane Fantom CX with 36-50 crank with 12-26 cassette (approx 22 lbs). Less gearing, but less weight also. Would the more aggressive riding position and lighter bike make up for the lack of a triple crank or should I consider something else. The price of the Fantom CX is very attractive, but I do not want to end up with a bike that wouldn't work for my commute. Thanks to all.

I would consider something else. If I were going to go with a double, I'd want something like a 50-34 compact double, and even that would limit the steepness of hill I'd attempt.

There's not a huge difference between a 24/20 and a 36/26. Roughly 32 gear inches vs 37.

If it's a problem you could always switch to something like an 11-32 cassette and you'd have lower gearing than your current triple.

Oops--correction the Schwinn has a 13-30 cassette--mistyped.

Here's Sheldon's gear calculator:

Plug in your numbers and see how it looks. Also,it would be a simple mod to swap in a MTB 12-32 cassette and derailleur. My Big Buzz has a compact double front/11-34 rear and it work real well in my hilly part of town.

Also, ditch the cross knobbies for some proper street slicks.
