GIS/CAD Technician here. These days work on maps around the nuclear power plants in the state.

On Bike to Work Day, we had 6 people pedal into the office. Distance ridden varied from 1.5 miles to 16 miles one way; mine clocks in at 12.

I'm a journalist — business news. Often, but not always, a desk job. Surprisingly fun.

Our products typically consist of ...

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE): flexible food packaging, shrink wrap, stretch film, overwrap
Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE): grocery bags, squeezable bottles, cable insulation
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): industrial drums, children's toys, pressure pipe
Very Low-Density Polyethylene (VLDPE): "boil-in" food packaging for rice, soup and pasta products, sealant films, form fill and seal pouch films

Although they are venturing out into other things. I know one of our plants does specialty plastics ... so perhaps ....

That sounds really, really cool! Are there lots of projects like yours? I've never heard of that sort of thing before.

We use poly for running gas lines underground. You get to melt it to make joints.

I started bike commuting on a 1980 Fontan Sprint for my first jobs as a paperboy and as a lifeguard.

Street canvasser for charity - face-to-face telemarketing, really, and extremely physical/exhausting. Outdoors fundraising all day, every day regardless of weather. Consider this my public apology to everyone here in Chicago whom I harrass five times a day.

Veterinary technician (non-certified) for an animal shelter. I'm convinced my commute-funk appeals to our occupants. Sort of 'hey, you reek like me!'
Known around work as "that bikenut", a badge of honor in my opinion.

I commute to winery jobs. Sometimes production, sometimes lab work, sometimes sales. A week of fuel for my truck for one particular job would be ~$100. If I use a mix of transit and bike it is $25. At 25 miles each way on a road that kills a cyclist every 2 or 3 years I'll avoid the main road as much as possible.

Cool. At our end, all we see are the pellets which go into making the plastic products. I was fascinated to see how many things those little pellets make.

Information Technology - Desk Job

I work in the IT industry doing the usual mix of system administration, tech support, and training. It's pretty much a desk job, but at least I get to move around a bit on most days... I support sites spread out about town and often bike between sites during the day.
