Best is the honeysuckle right near my front door.
Worst is a small area on my commute that emits some sewage-like odor. I don't know exactly where it's coming from, but I smell it at the same place every morning, year round.

I live in Milwaukee, so I have no idea what fresh asphalt smells like. If I ever see any, I will hop off my bike and give it a nice big kiss, no matter how foul it smells!

Best smells - passing by houses with stuff cooking on the grill.
Worst smells - passing by houses with stuff cooking on the grill, realizing that I'm starving, and still have an hour to go before I get home!

(I love the thread, btw, as I made this exact comment after I started commuting, that the smells of the city (good bad or otherwise) made me feel like I was actually experiencing the place!)

best: the rain, the trees and grass, and the mysterious hamburger smell that comes from the woods some days
worst: black diesel smog being forced down my lungs when i'm behind a bus, dead animals, and stagnant mud in the sun

Or worst... folks burning stuff on the grill... Just makes me want to knock on the door and yell... "you're burning it!"

I have another best smell:
The smell of fireplaces in winter. Combine that with a late night snow ride and you have one of my favorite rides.

This morning after a light rain it smelled like ocean salty air. LOVE it.
In early spring - lilacs too.

Worst: Car exhaust/bus exhaust.
Most Worst: sewer smell at low tide along Alaska/Marginal in warm weather.

I like the smell of corn, freshly plowed fields, newly dug foundations, and dead animals. The last one may not make any sense - but for me, smelling a dead animal lets me know that i am alive . The smells i don't like are car exhaust, and rotten ponds.

Favorite: Those scented dryer sheets that release a pleasant odor.
Worst: Warm garbage with marinated diapers in them.

Best: Cool, fresh morning air and trucks hauling loads of woodchips. Love the smell of freshly cut wood.
Worst: The manure-hauling trucks that seem to pass around the same time every afternoon.

Best: Probably the faint whiffs of my deodorant I get when I stop at stoplights. Sadly, there aren't that many restaurants along my route.

Worst: This flood control ditch/pond setup I have to ride past, which for the past two weeks has smelled like there's probably a dead animal somewhere nearby.

My favorite smell is magnolia... especially in the morning.

My least favorite smell... the Chattahoochee River. Especially on summer afternoons where there's no wind.

My favorite smell is the dew-covered plants of all kinds that I smell on the way to work. Sunrise smells better than any other time of day, you know?

My least favorite smell happens when I get to work. (no, it's not me) I work at an ambulance station, and when I walk in to the bay to park my bike, I get hit with a wall of diesel exhaust. I come in at 0600, when lots of ambulances are coming and going.

Am I the only one who passes by fish plants? I pass by three! Sadly, no nice restaurants.

The worst and especially if they are going just fast enough to not pass, but to slow to let them go ahead.

Best: When the old strawberry fields, formerly near the main gate to SoCal Disneyland, were plowed each year.

Worst: The several times I've had to ride past a road-killed skunk.

Best: Passing the "Shrimp Shack" on the way home when I work 7a-3p

Worst: Passing through the underpass during the summer smelling the stink of warm "HOBO PEE"

For me that one's the best and worst. The hot and humid August air is hard enough to breathe already without being choked out by the smell of chocolate. But in the cool weather, it's very refreshing.

Best is just the morning smell. One unnatural smell I also really like is following a hop truck.

Worst is "reclaimed water" (sewage sprayed on crops as well as cyclists if the jets are poorly aimed to those of you who don't know the concept.) Second worst is the landfill. Sadly, I encounter one of these smells almost every time I ride.
