What are your favorite/worst smells on your commute?
I realized commuting I use my nose more than ever. In my car I don't even smell things.
I love the grass smells and the morning rain drying up. I hate the smell of fresh asphalt. |
Well, the worst is without a doubt when I am downwind from the city dump. Pretty gross. Best is a toss up between when the honeysuckle is in bloom (deliriously lovely) and when I am riding home in the afternoon and pass a local hamburger joint...utter heaven, especially when I am hungry. And they do make an awesome hamburger.

doughnuts/roadkill
|
good: bakeries in the morning.
bad: that sickly sweet trash smell NYC is famous for. it get exponentially worse as the heat and humidity rise. |
bakery-dog poo
|
I like the smell of fresh asphalt. Also, on my way home, I pass a bbq restaurant that often smells like fresh baked cornbread.
Worst is the juice that drips out of garbage trucks that collect from restaurant dumpsters in the morning. |
I like the smell of dew in the morning and honeysuckle. My commute also takes me by an awesome italian pizzeria so the smell of that usually quickens my pace.
The only smells that I come in contact with that I dislike are exhaust and polluted creeks. |
My favorite route has a barbacue joint, mystery plants/flowers I cannot see but smell like honeysuckle or something, of course mowed grass on the ride home(all good). Then there is the sewer smell on campus very close to work, some mystery chcmical smell in the industrial section, and deisel fumes and auto exhaust. Oh and my favorite, dead animals.
|
Best is riding past houses as I close in toward home and smell the various meals cooking... sometimes you can tell exactly what some one is making... Meatloaf or something like that... other times I just wonder... what is that smell?
Worst is perhaps that strange sulfur smell of a poor exhaust system. Once while riding to work I passed an electrical transformer box that just did not smell right... I called it into the electric company and they thought it was a bit odd, but sent a truck to check it out. The driver called me to verify where I smelled the odd box and later told me it had indeed overloaded. I thought that was cool. Yeah in a car you hardly smell anything at all. I notice when I ocean swim that smells really carry for a long distance. |
Good: BBQ joint, forest, rain, things in bloom, skunk.
Bad: roadkill, mud flats, rotting swamp, exhaust, skunk. |
Favorite: Bakeries in the morning
Worst: Exhaust, sewage treatment facility, oil tanker depot... (Why is it that on some large trucks the exhaust pipe faces the right side of the vehicle?!?!?) |

it's pretty amazing. |
How many of you go past BBQ joints?!?! :twitchy:
|
Sewers... vile.
The smell of pine in the valley... delightful. The views are also decidedly different. |
Favorite: coffee fumes on the way in, tasty food fumes on the way home, also river-water.
Least favorite: garbage that's been sitting in the sun. |

I know all the great BBQ joints in raleigh but sadly I don't pass any :D |
Favorite: Coffee shops even though I do not drink coffee due to having issues with caffeine. Just love the smell.
Least favorite: It is a tie between open air sewage treatment plants and cigarette smoke. |
Here in Iowa we get interesting ones simultaneously: Clover, fresh cut alfafa, mock orange trees, deer carcass, hog facility. It's very confusing!
|
I usually smell people's breakfast. Sausage or bacon mostly. They have got to be making alot to smell up the street. My neighbors are chinese and their house smells like curry or other very strong spices every morning.
|
+1 Clover (I think that's what it is) smells like warm milk and springtime
Worst: mooshed skunk Silage is also noteworthy, but it is not really good or bad, just present and strong. |
Best: doughnut smell, from riding behind the Safeway
Worst: cigarette smoke from drivers |
I had both extremes today. Part of my commute circles a lake/nature preserve. I'm not sure what I was smelling, but it was lush and springlike. Loved it. About 10 blocks later I was behind a garbage truck for a while. :)
|
I got behind a yard waste truck today, like cut limbs and leaves. It wasn't too bad.
|
Worst: I ride past this place

Try following a full dripping garbage truck. OMG that is nasty. I pulled over to put distance between us.
