I've got 3 lights to go through and a few stop signs. But this doesn't mean much when there aren't many people on the road since I commute at 5:30 in the morning

commute times
I recently recalibrated my commute at 8.5 miles ( one way) I do it in as little as 29 minutes to as much as 45 minutes. Average between 31-36 minutes. I'm riding a single speed with a 65 inch gear most of the time and I am 49 years old and 260 pounds. When I ride my geared bike, I can cut the time down a couple of minutes. This distance is what I am used to over the last 35 years of commuting. Started in high school and did the same distance in my twenties, with a long gap in between and now, I seem to be doing the same distance again in my late 40's. I've commuted 40 miles RT a couple years ago and it took just about 1 hour and 15 minutes. My longest commute was a 56 mile RT taking 1:59 and 2:15. Ten miles one way is about the max for me for recovery. Any more and it just takes too much time and energy out of your day.

12 miles - 45-50 min. I stop at stoplights for half of that because of the nature of the traffic.

16.5 kms each way. Loaded panniers.
My record is 28 minutes there and 29 home.
Longest trip home to nearly an hour with a 70kmh wind in my face.
oops
I corrected this to km's and originally put miles.
Thats 10.3 miles in 28 minutes.
I'm not as fast as Lance..................

rolling times
traffic + trail, 28 miles, 1hour 30min (more when its over 90 deg or windy), 1:40-1:45 riding time.
traffic + light-rail, 8.5 miles, 20-22 min, ~28min riding time
I don't have many stoplights and I tend not to spot at stop signs.....

Ok, so a lot of people are quoting "rolling times"... no wonder you're so fast.

I almost always ride x-tra miles and never the same distance everyday so I don't really keep track because I usually don't need to be there at a specific time (Yes, I have a sweet job), but if I go straight there (7 miles) my ~20 minute commute only adds 5-7 minutes compared to driving time. Since it also cuts out a need for exercise, commuting saves you a lot of time, even if you are slow.

To work it takes me 30 minutes to go 3.1 miles. The last mile is pushing the bike on the sidewalk. I'm new to the whole commute by bike thing so I'm still building up the stamina / courage to tackle streets.
From work it takes me ~17 minutes. The reduced time is because the town sidewalks are usually deserted at 11:30 PM and I usually pedal slowly (~8 MPH) on the sidewalk for the first mile until I reach a nice wide street to finish the last two miles.

Sounds similiar to mine as well. I've got 2 pretty steep hills to climb, last one of which is on the campus where I work. I hate that stupid hill
