My Bike Got Religion Today!!!

Well I rode my bike to church this morning for a partial commute. I drove to the next town and parked at a school and rode from there. Turned out it was a short 5.4 mile round trip commute. I took my lycra kit off once I got there and I got there early, but after church I got lots of snickers and jokes from friends of course.

I got lots of blank stares when I said I just wanted to ride my bike. This was my answer to the question, "Why?"

alexanderaf 06-29-08 03:15 PM

Exactly, why bike when you can drive a car?

lol, jk

Wear your lycra kit next time and drive your car. Get um used to it.
Then tell um you don't have any underwear on.

I ride to church when I can. It's a 22 mile R/T though. We are currently meeting at a high school, which means bike racks!

We also have a community center (rehab'd old house) and when we have service there, other people ride to church too.

I usually wear regular shorts over my bike shorts when going to church. No one thinks anything of it and I just change in a handicapped stall once I get there.

:roflmao:

How far is your church that you need to drive part way OP? Just curious..

I'm not even religious, but I spent the weekend at this church and the bike is brand-new, and I took the photo this morning and then saw this thread, so...

Gee, I'd be making fun of you too. Next time either bike all the way or forget the lycra. :p

Probably some of them are laughing, and I bet a few others are thinking, "thats a good idea."

Dude, I am not sure you should be riding your bike to church:

The ethic of conservation is the explicit abnegation of man's dominion over the Earth. The lower species are here for our use. God said so: Go forth, be fruitful, multiply, and **** the planet -- it's yours. That's our job: drilling, mining and stripping. Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars -- that's the Biblical view.

More than one Mormon missionary has made me stop and think "Whoa! Bike commuter wearing his work clothes!" followed by "Oh, it's a Mormon." - Not that being forced to proselytize-by-bike is such a bad thing, I suppose.

DataJunkie 06-29-08 04:44 PM

I use churches as motivation for intervals. Ride to a church, turn around, and ride as fast as possible in the opposite direction.
Sorry, can't help myself. I am allergic to organized religion due to my childhood.

Kind of funny, actually. A lot of my church friends live a life of modesty that many would consider "Green" more out of stewardship of that which God gave us, than out of "help! we're killing teh urfs!!!"

Not all Christians are gas-guzzler-driving uber-consumer types. I laughed at the article. Ann Coulter is such a dweeb sometimes. By sometimes, I mean almost always.

I'm becoming kind of affectionate toward the disorganized kind.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that they were. My post was meant purely tongue in cheek.

I ride mine to church and music practice all the time and don't make any special effort to modify my clothing. I have ridden in slacks, shirt and tie and also shorts, sandals and a T shirt. I wouldn't subject anyone to seeing me in tight fitting stretchy clothes, especially for such a short ride.

alexanderaf 06-29-08 06:15 PM

I read that article...

"What does he think we are -- Swedes? We're Americans. This is a prosperous country. We will not live like Swedes. We want 18-ton Ford Exploro-cruisers, cell phones, CDs, hot showers, blow dryers, DVD players and jet skis.

Fuel is the metric of prosperity, and conservationism is an acknowledgement that we are in decline of prosperity -- that this is the beginning of the long bleak twilight of civilization. If you posit that we have fixed energy sources and we have to ration them, then we are dying as a species. "

I used to consider myself republican. I felt less government was better, lower taxes was better, and punishing criminals was better...but look at the ridiculous claims they're making now? They've been slowly getting more delusional as time goes by. Now there's two moronic political parties controlling our country!

Actually, it's those Mormon Missionary dudes that got me back into bicycling. I noticed how cool and healthy they looked, even after riding in the summer heat in suit and tie. I told myself that I want to be healthy like THAT! Now, 6 months later, I can ride with the best of them but still need to loose more weight.

Riding my bike always gets me closer to the Gods. Ride Free!

Mooo 06-29-08 07:04 PM

We rode too. Took the kids on two tandems.
Last week there were a couple other bikes tied to the tree too. Not today :-(
Rode to Subway afterwards.

We ride for a variety of reasons, some sorta greenish, some not. Mostly I want the kids to know there's another way to do things; I want them to understand something different.

Sometimes, however, I ride just to spite one of our members who drove his car to the Al G film and had to stand up and yack about it. :D
