Where do you stash your bike?

This is probably an old, old idea on this forum, but I'm going for it anyway. I've read about various security fears, and soon my own will be magnified with equipment that's costing me 4 digits. Where do you stash your bike when you are at work and at home?

I work in a school. In the past, administrators have said nothing, zero, nada, and zip, about me parking my bicycle behind my desk in my classroom. Only comment I can remember was my principal say, "You are so awesome" when I pedaled up to school in the morning. (I'm changing schools this year, and I hope that my new administrators will adopt the same attitude; if they don't, they will be in for a fight.) It's a way for me to keep my bike secure, and it's a great conversation piece (and hopefully, some modeling) for the kids.

At home, which has always been a condo/apartment, I always keep my bikes inside. I find that the tires don't go flat when I keep them indoors. Plus, there is the obvious security risk.

Home: Garage
Work: Loading dock (locked to railing)

Home: Garage
Work (Day Shift): Right next to my desk
Work (Night Shift): Right next to my desk

I can't imagine leaving it locked, unattended in a big city.

Like I pointed out in my thread about lockup anxiety...if everyone bicycle commutes (which we all express desire for), then these indoor storage situations rapidly become impossible. For most people it would mean bicycles underfoot and overrunning the entire workplace, if everyone insisted on having an indoor stowage spot.

Home: in the kitchen :D
Work: Down in the basement near the loading dock.

I guess I should consider myself fortunate. Seems like a lot of people on here must lock up their bikes outside and leave them unattended.

My workplace allows me to bring it indoors and there is no need to lock anything up in my building. There are quite a few people who commute on a regular basis and we all know each other.

They've started a "club" so to speak where all the commuters get together and go out to lunch once a week.

I'm glad my workplace allows me to do this. I'd hate to hafta lock up my bike outside

Home: In my garage.
Work: In my office.

I'm glad I don't have to leave my bike unattended on a rack all day. I probably would ride a much crappier bike if I did, but I don't mind riding my nicest bike to work because I can keep tabs on it in my office all day.

First day I showed up at work with my bike my project manager asked where I was going to put my bike. I politely told him right behind me in my office. He said OK, that was the end of it. With all the random thunderstorms in Houston, I'd hate to leave it outside.

At my house, the bike sleeps in my closet.

Work: in an unused office

Home: Most recently ridden in the living room, all other bikes in the garage.
Work: warehouse... unlocked... it's a small company. At the old shop, few of us had keys to the warehouse. New shop there are more, so I MAY start locking it up.

MIKEnDC 07-01-08 07:00 AM

Home: just inside door to my apartment
Work: locked up at the loading dock entrance (outdoors but under roof, just outside Security desk and with a camera pointed at it)

girljen 07-01-08 07:47 AM

Home: Locked in the garage.

Work: Inside the ambulance bay, where it looks wistfully at all the ambulances and wishes it had a siren and an air horn too. Lots of cameras in the bay, btw.

Home-garage, unless I need maintenance, then it goes into the basement where my tools, radio, and beer are.

Work-in my office about 5 feet from me as I type :)

I will say that I am very fortunate to be able to do this. My employer seems more concerned with us getting work done than anything else, and my function is internal facing, so I don't need to meet with customers or anything. Also, my employer is very encouraging on the fitness angle, since it makes healthy and less expensive employees!

No, really.

Home: In the garage u-locked to a hand truck. Other bikes stored here too but not locked.
Work: too dangerous to bike to work, so I don't.

noteon 07-01-08 10:28 PM

I got a folding bike so I wouldn't have to lock my bike outside on the street. It goes up to the office with me.

At home they're in the hallway. We live in an apartment, so there's no such thing as a garage--but even if my building had a bike room, I wouldn't keep a valuable bike there.

bwunger 07-01-08 10:38 PM

Home: In my basement/workshop
Work: Outside in the bike racks. They're under some stairs out of the weather and work is inside an 8 foot fence topped by razor wire with security guards at the gates. No, it's not a prison. I still put a cable and master lock on it though. It's nice not to have to bring my Kryptonite New York Chain to work though. :p

Throwmeabone 07-01-08 10:54 PM

At home I keep my bike hanging on a wall in my room because I live in an apartment. At work I keep it in the spacious men's bathroom.

bobcrotch 07-01-08 10:56 PM

We have a very active bike rack at work so I feel pretty confident leaving my bike there during the day. I do use a kryptonite U-lock though.

At home I keep in the dining room propped up against the wall. I'll move it to the back patio, or into the den (hardwood floors) to do repairs or tinkering.

I also carry a kevlar/steel keyed cable lock in my backpack at all times for quick trips to the store and such. If I had panniers I would probably just take the u-lock with me, but it's really freakin' heavy and I'm afraid it will bash up my laptop. So the u-lock stays at the bike rack.

Come to think of it, is this common for anyone else? Do a lot of other folks have people leaving big bulky security devices at the bike racks at work/school? It honestly didn't even occur to me until one of my co-workers mentioned it.

Rober 07-01-08 11:00 PM

Home: In the basement "bike garage."
Work: An unused storage room two doors down from my office.

My employer, manager, and immediate supervisor are very pro-bike. I'm one of several that ride to work and the policy is "if its not in anyone's way you can keep it wherever you want." Nice set-up.

mds0725 07-01-08 11:10 PM

Home: In the living room of my studio apartment (there's a garage in my apartment building but nothing to lock a bike to in there).

Work: Locked to a bike rack in a locked (card key accessible) bike room near the loading dock.

You rock.

Why couldn't I have had you as a teacher in high school? Instead of having teachers that bring cool stuff with wheels into the classroom, I had teachers that were around for the creation of the original wheel.

Anyway...

At work: Dunno yet...haven't ridden there for work yet (just rode there once to see how the ride was on my day off) due to my lack of a messenger bag to carry my work stuff in...:-(

At home: It's about 6 ft away from me right now in my living room...lol My girlfriend looooooooves that...NOT...

anthegreat1 07-01-08 11:50 PM

home: locked on front porch
work: storage room
