It was hell before they paved it... but now it's heaven!

So smooth. I gave the construction guys a big grin and the thumbs up as I went past today. :thumb:

I think they were wondering what the hell is wrong with me.

I loved fresh roads. So quiet and smooth.

There is some fresh stuff on my route this year ...... awesome feeling! I can coast forever!

My county just finished repaving a 2.5-mile stretch of road I use on my commute. Very, very nice.

The new pavement is actually reflecting a good bit of sunlight, and when I'm riding with polarized lenses the whole street turns into a textureless expanse of dark gray. I spent some time at a stop light taking the glasses off, then putting them back on, to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I've never seen that sort of profound lighting effect before.

My problem isn't the pavement, it's the broken glass everywhere.:(

In Seattle there is an experimental paving material they used some years back that is so soft, it never gets un-fresh. When the temperature gets over 90 F the stuff literally flows, albeit with much viscosity. My recessed SPD will make a 1/4 inch deep impression in that kind of weather.

Two years ago I got upgraded from gravel to asphalt. I transitioned from preferring a MTB to prefering a road bike.

Be thankful guys. Where I am they're trying to cut corners and do what they call "slurry paving". They bring one of the asphalt grinders in and grind the top surface off, mix it with tar and put it right back down. You get all the stink of fresh asphalt, and a road surface that's like riding on sandpaper it's so rough. Almost as bad as tar and chip, without the loose gravel.

That sounds almost as bad as the roads I grew up on where they'd just lay down a layer of tar every 2-3 years and then throw down some pea gravel on top and call it "paved". Bad for bikes and bad for cars as the first several months all the gravel would be thrown up into the undersides of the cars as they drove over it and you just didn't want to bike on it for fear of getting sprayed with gravel by the passing cars and getting tar all over your bike/self.

I just sent some hate mail to the head of Boston Public Works. They ripped up sections of Comm Ave (aka my most direct route to work) and have simply left the grooved pavement, raised sewer grates and manhole covers, etc...for WEEKS.

Weeks isn't bad for the Boston area - A couple of years ago they repaved Center st in Newton, and I believe that it took over a year between ripping up the old pavement and grooving, and when they got around to repaving. Those raised sewer grates are fun when covered in a layer of ice!

Not just a Boston thing, a MA thing! There is a stretch of road by me that I don't even drive anymore, let alone ride. They redid the water pipes on this road almost 2 years ago, and then just patched it back in. In the winter, the work areas sink a couple inches and they just coldpack them, and in the summer, they dig it up more. I don't think they are ever going to repave it!

Fresh Paved roads rock! I took a little side trip on my commute home yesterday to bomb a freshly paved hill :thumb: it was awesome and totally worth the ride up it.

I like freshly laid white lines on the road. I roll so smooth on them

yeah its the last few miles of my commute, and a one lane narrow road full of hills.

it's a lot nicer when the pavement is smooth and full.

I hate freshly paved roads, new cement is ok, asphault sucks in Texas in the summer. I have 6 new miles of fresh asphault, yesterday the temp was 100, my bike computer read 120 on these "new" roads. At one light where I has to sit for several mins caused me to switch feet 3 times waitng for the light to keep my feet from frying.

There was this road by my house that I ride a few times a week, and I saw them ripping up a mile long section of it one day. The road was in pretty good shape, but I was excited for it to be super smooth. Got to ride it a week later and it was HORRIBLE! So badly wash boarded and rough that I ride right next to the center line. The right half of the lane looks like the moon. They didn't do any work under the road or anything, so I am not sure why they "repaved" it. The old road was WAY better.

Good for the OP. Most of the time around here they chip seal the dang road. It takes about a year for auto traffic to smooth it out.

Hey, I don't even care -- this stuff is bad enough to trash tires and grab your wheel and throw you to the ground. I told the nogoods that if my bike gets trashed or I get hurt, I'll be showing up in person with the bill.

Haha. Reminds me of the time they repaved some of the roughest bike paths on campus with new, smooth smooth asphalt. I was riding with a buddy and as soon as he rolled over them he shouted "BUTTER!" and everyone around looked at him funny.

Yes, I like the newly repaved roads. But I wish they could make the new surface flush with the old driveways and such. Any turnoff into a parking lot or driveway is now about a inch and a half to two inch bump.

Mayor Laura Miller promised us potholes and she delivered. :notamused: Makes me glad I use a MTB for my commutes.

Parts of this stretch actually were repaved earlier this year... only to be torn up again! WTF??
