Sweat Management

Does anyone have a suggestion for sweat management that's better than a head band? Presently, I wear a head band under my helmet, but find that it really doesn't cut it when it gets warm. I still end up with glasses I can barely see through. The head band is pretty well soaked, and still is in the afternoon when I go to ride home. It's kinda gross, and a little unsafe when the glasses get sweat on them.

cabbotts 07-17-08 02:51 PM

www.haloheadband.com maybe a better headband? I can't think of anything better to help sweat management on your forehead other than a sweatband.

Maybe you need some of those glasses with the windshield wipers!
:roflmao:

More coasting, less pedaling. Much as with cars, efficiency drops rapidly beyond a certain speed. Better to go a bit slower and end up a lot cooler than a bit faster and much more sweatier.

Thanks for the link to the halo headband - that looks interesting. Do you use one of those?

Part of the reason I commute is to get a good workout in, so I don't mind sweating. Plus, with a 19 mile ride, I'm going to get sweaty no matter how easy I go. I just want to keep it out of my eyes / glasses. I have the same problem on rec rides, but I don't have to put the soaked headband back on eight hours later in that case!

cycling cap with the visor flipped down.

Cap sops up all the sweat (and keeps you from getting a sunburnt noggin, if you're a baldie like me). Sweat drips down off the edge of the visor, and not onto your specs.

Spent 13.5 hours on the bike, much of it in 90+ degree heat. Sweat like nobody's business, but I never had to wipe down my shades.

I also carry a towel with me on those especially hot days and since the 1st half of my commute is durrning the hotest part of the day practically, i werk 2nd shift, and that seems to have help'd. Although i've just replaced my old helmet, it was 10 years old, and that seems to have made a difference also.

I've ridden once since I got my Halo; it helps, but it's not perfect solution. I'm also looking at Sweat Gutr.

Skull caps, bandanas do nothing for me.

BCRider 07-17-08 08:32 PM

They make neck tube bandanas that have silica gel in them. You soak them in water so they swell up and then when you are out in the wind the air dries the water out of the silica gel and the tube cools off a lot. And since your neck with the blood flow to your head is in the middle it helps cool YOU a pretty decent amount. If they happened to make a head band the same way you'd have two levels of cooling.

i cannot ride without my Halo, i sweat like a freakin pig and it burns my eyes.. it works as avertised and you can pick it up at your local REI if there is one in your area

I have one I wear under my helmet and I find it works very well. The rubber strip is great. I saw they have these: http://store.haloheadband.com/skull_caps_s/11.htm which would hold even more sweat I'm sure

Lurker1999 07-18-08 12:19 AM

www.buyabuff.com

I've been riding with one for the last few weeks and it's excellent in 80-90 degree weather in keeping the sweat out of your eyes. Keep it with the loose end dangling down your neck and you'll wick the sweat mostly down your back.

kwrides 07-18-08 05:22 AM

I too use a Halo headband. I agree that it is not perfect...after 90 mins or so, it fills with sweat and stops helping, BUT, it is 100% better than riding without a Halo.

I'm partial to my ventilated all white baseball cap. Good for keeping sunlight (and some headlights) out of my eyes too.

You also might rethink the unthinkable:eek: - the relative value of that helmet to your well being.

I like sweating (I'm in weight loss mode)!

But then I have a shower at work.

+1 on cycling caps. And, at $5 per from Bike Nashbar, you might as well get a couple; they tend to get dirty and stinky fast. ;)

kbblodorn 07-18-08 07:26 AM

Thanks for the feedback. I might ride by the REI on the way home and see if they have one. (I'm sure they will NOT want me trying it on at that point though!!!)

Pscyclepath 07-18-08 07:55 AM

Two of the toys that I brought back from last year's Hotter 'n Hell 100 were a Sweat-Gutr headband and one of those little silica gel neckbands. Both work well... especially the Sweat-Gutr to keep the sweat from running of my nose and eyebrows and down my glasses...

SlimAgainSoon 07-18-08 11:21 AM

Halo -- I won't ride without it.

Works great -- I've not had a big sweat dump into the eyes every since I started riding with one of these headbands.

Chuck G 07-18-08 11:25 AM

I wear a "headsweats" brand coolmax skull cap. In the summer I ride home in 90-something degrees F and usually high humidity, and never have sweat drip in my eyes or on my eyeglasses. When it's really hot I wet the skull cap in cold water and wring it out so I get some evaporative cooling on my head.

Torrilin 07-18-08 12:25 PM

Try carrying two headbands, and maybe a rag for your glasses. One for the morning, one for the evening.

And backing off a *little* might help. Not tons, just enough so that you can drink a bit more water. That helps me feel cooler, even if the water is a bit warm. And it *feels* like I sweat less when I'm drinking enough...

If you can find a shadier route, that would also help. When I was out and about yesterday, I noticed a real difference when I went from a shady street to a wide open main road... the heat went from easy to handle to "myghod it's killing me!".

Same

charles vail 07-18-08 07:51 PM

huh

+1 on the cycling cap which you can even wear without a helmet.:50:That is what I do in extreme heat or when I know I will be doing a bunch of hill climbing.

StephenH 07-18-08 08:16 PM

I carry a washcloth in my shorts pocket and wipe my forehead every minute or two.

kbblodorn 07-21-08 07:30 AM

I picked up a Halo at REI, used it the first time this morning. It was 68 degrees at 5:30, but near 100% humidity. Temp at work was 74 at 6:30. So desptie the coolish temps, it was still a sweaty ride. I noticed an improvement for sure with the halo; I didn't have sweat down on the lenses. There was still sweat on the sunglasses frame when I got in, across the top of the glasses, so I think with a tougher / hotter / longer ride I might still have some issues. I set the halo as low on my forehead as I could, too. Anyway, thanks for the advice, might be back trying some other suggestions too!
