New to biking need opinion (Trek 7000)
Found a aluminum trek 7000 in my area going for $120 (comes with a bike rack for a car). I have not biked in forever and want to start commuting on one. My ride is only 3 miles with a couple moderate hills. The bike seems to be in good shape. Any opinions?

Any bike has the potential top be good in the right hands. Take it to the LBS to be inspected before you buy it (the same as you would take your car to a mechanic before you buy one used). If it passes their inspection for a used bike, then go for it. Alot of people will tell you that the parts that came with the Trek 7000 are nothing to be excited about, but I have the same bike and have not had a single problem with it. While the position is a little higher than I was use to, I have no problem averaging speeds between 15 and 18mph on an ok day. Fenders would be a good option to look into also.

The 7000 was one of their higher end aluminium framed bikes. I was looking at those back when I ended up going really posh and got my Speciallized M4 Stumpjumper instead. If it's in any sort of non damaged shape at all and the wheels turn and don't make sickly noises that's an iron clad STEAL! You should run right over, get your wind before you knock on the door and grudgingly pay them the money while looking as non chalant as you can. After you finish doing your victory dance at home keep the bike and sell the rack.
Then use the rack money to get some 26 x 1.25 or 1.5 inch road slicks along with a few tubes so you have spares. And if it rains around your area a set of fenders.

I think thats a great price for that bike if its in good shape. I have the 7100 about two months old now and i love it. Although my clydesdale butt has been popping spokes on the rear wheel lately, at 2 now. I would buy it, mine has been a very decent bike, i think the only difference is the suspension fork. Its a great bike to re-learn biking on.

I just picked up a Trek 700 (I think the steel version of what you have). It seems perfect for commuting to me. I plan to try it out once i get it all checked out.

I rode a 7500 for about 2 years. I rides like a tank. everyday I would hit curbs without flinching, and never had to true the wheel. Good luck.

I have a 7100, and I like it a lot. For the price you are getting the bike, you can't get something near the quality at Walmart. Think of it that way. It'll be MUCH lighter than the junk at the superstores.
If you stick with it for awhile you'll probably want to upgrade.
If you like the way it rides, shifts, etc., and want to keep it, do what these other guys said about the tires (if you will mostly be on paved surfaces). Keep the stock tires if you plan to ride on gravel, grass, etc.
I'm selling my 7100 in a couple days to upgrade. I was going to get a 7500, but now I'm not so sure. I like getting up those hills faster and easier, so I'm either going after the 7.3 FX (much lighter and faster) or will get the Soho 1.0, all made by Trek.
I ride about four miles each way to work, and a couple of the hills are a doozy (depending on which way I go), so I want a better hillclimber. The FX will take care of that.
The reason I like the Soho, besides pretty good components, is the looks of it. It's a commuting bike, and has outstanding brakes, but I don't really need it.
But it looks so cool that I might not be able to help it.

For $120 + a rack, you can't really go wrong. Make sure that the bike will fit you, check to make sure all parts work, and go for it. And it's a 3 mile commute, so it really doesn't matter that the bike be perfect. If you find that it's not working for you, it still has great resell value.

Awesome find! Go for it! Even it's not the bike you ultimately want, you can re-sell it and the car rack easily. You might even come out ahead. Hope you bought it before someone else snapped it up.
