Commuting footwear
 

I'm looking at footwear for the upcoming winter and beyond. Currently I wear boots because those protect my feet on the job best. If I'm hearing snickers and giggles that's okay. :) I was looking at crocs.com at noticed a pair of all terrain cold and wet crocs with leather uppers. Has anyone got any experience using crocs while pedaling their bike?

What do you wear or recommend for footwear? Only rule is not breaking the bank. I commute 18 miles a day and am on my feet all day.

Croc's plastic compound causes my feet to break out, can't stand them and find them uncomfortable. YMMV, especially with socks, but I find them too soft for bike pedaling.

I wear indoor soccer shoes with inserts. I have toe clips on my pedals, but found that my foot was comfortable in the soccer shoes and didn't see a need to change.

i wear spd shoes, shimano m40s i think, they are pretty good to walk in, but i change shoes at work.

Specialized Tahoe MTB shoes, but like Daven1986 I change shoes at work.

when going to uni, i dont change shoes though, and they are comfortable enough to be in all day. but i wouldn't want to walk long distances in them!!

I have been wearing Teva Hurricane sandals for over a year now and I used them to ride in 30 degree weather with two pair of wool socks. I have also used Adidas skater shoes but I much prefer the toes free sandals. I have not had any foot problems since wearing the sandals but extreme cold might necessitate
boots or full shoes of some kind. I ride with BMX pedals so whatever shoes I have on seems to work fine.:twitchy:

For super cold days I have a nice pair of merrell hiking boots a full size larger than what I normally wear. My mountain bike I use in winter has platforms.
For warmer winter days I use my shimano MTB shoes with my salsa casserole and shimano spd sandals.
My go fast bike tends to migrate to the trainer in winter.
This year I am replacing my worn out MTB shoes and trying a different booty to see if I can get my clipless pedal comfort zone a bit lower. I love clipless but hate having cold feet more.

If you're using flat pedals on your bike, i.e. the kind that have no clips or straps or anything like that, and you have no foot problems or pain that require you to have a stiff shoe to support the bones of your feet, then you can wear whatever you like.

What does "winter" mean to you? Does it snow where you are or is the daytime high in the 60's? No one knows because you didn't say :). We can only play the guessing game.

We don't have real winters here in ABQ (usually dry and above 0C), but I wear a pair of REI water socks underneath my Sidi mountain bike shoes. My feet stay warmish.

Seattle weather...rainy, cold, windy, sometimes snow. I've got flat pedals and I wear orthotics that I don't want getting wet.

In the winter I wear Sorells with waterproof leather uppers. I add an extra pair of sole inserts to make them a bit stiffer (easy to experiment with, and easy to try different materials.). I lucked out and found a pair of fairly stiff wool liners for $1, so I bought a bunch. I only used one last season so I may not have to do much work making liners this winter!

+1 for skateboard shoes. I have a pair that are roomy enough for a pair of ski socks. Great for dry cold winters.

I splurged on Gore-Tex hiking boots for winter, and I wear Teva jogging sandals in the summer. When the weather's temperate and dry, I just use whatever I'm wearing at work, usually athletic shoes.
