long distance car pooling

This is not really bike related, but it is commute related. Has anyone used any of the internet car pooling sites to help them plan long distance trips? i am trying to figure out a way to get out to Colorado from California occasionally to study music. Flying is realy not an option as i would like to bring some instruments (balafon, couple of drums, etc). My other option might be Amtrak, but i thought i'd consider car pooling as well. Any other options??? TNX.
