A fast road bike with full fender mounts?

In my dreams, I envision a road bike that blends the wet weather practicality of a Surly Cross Check with the speed and comfort of a Specialized Roubaix. It would have frame eyelets for full fenders, allow clearance for up to a 28mm width tire, and yet still use caliper brakes, reasonably light wheels, and quality brifters.

1. Does such a bike exist without doing a custom build?

2. If you could build up such a bike with a budget of $1500, what would you recommend?

I'm pretty sure a carbon Trek Pilot has fender eyelets. I don't know if it can fit 28 mm tires.

I ride a Trek XO1 cyclocross. It'll take my Nokian studded winter tires - 35mm if I remember. It has eyelets.

I can think of hundreds of old school lugged steel bikes made in the 70's and 80's that would make a nice comfy durable and fast ride............and they often took racks and fenders. These bikes often had 32-36 spoke wheels with tires around 28-32mm at the widest. Don't forget its not the bike that makes you fast. The difference might be a measly 1-2 mph between a 18 pound bike and a 25 pound bike loaded up with tools and water and you won't notice it until you start climbing steep hills. In a race it can make a difference but in the real world its not so important. It would be interesting to do some actual comparison testing over maybe a year or so between bikes of varying weights and see how much of a performance difference there really is.

Leftover Trek Portland will do everything you want and give you true all-weather capability with disc brakes. Local shops have '07's for $1400. You can also take a chance on one of the Schwinn DBX's on eBay(great bike,but I've heard stories about a couple of those bikes not being stored properly). As above,but slightly lower component level. Both of these are light,fast,good components,and take full fenders and racks.

i have a giant scr 1, it is a 2008 model so you can't get it any more but most of the scr range had full mounts, and the bike is very nice

The Cannondale Synapse Sport meets this description. It has a very soft rear triangle so it's comfy. Rack and fender mounts, yes, though you may not be able to run panniers on it as the chainstays are short. You can get it with 105 shifters/derailleurs and a nice-looking Truvativ crankset. Daoswald in the Road Cycling forum has one.

Building up inside of $1500 prompts the question of what level of crankset, derailleurs you want, as well as what wheelset. I know you said "reasonably light", but that's as good as not saying anything. How heavy? <1800g for the set?

How about a moderately-fast, super-comfortable cyclocross bike, with fender mounts and a disc-specific rack?



The tires I'm running now are for my potholed commuting, but I've run Ultra Gator 25s. Those make it a little road-ier...

Lots of great suggestions here that I will research further. Basically what I want is a comfy road bike that will never see dirt, but with the ability to add full fenders as I expect to be relocating to the PNW this winter. Clip-on fenders are okay but don't cut it for serious rain riding/commuting. I'll be riding a couple of centuries per year but also group rides where I push my physical limits. Since I don't have the room for two bikes, I've been looking for an all-around but road-oriented bike. Again, lots of great ideas above - thank you.

I think the Soma ES is about exactly what you are looking for. Nice bike for commuting. Fender and rack mounts. Can strip them off and be comfortable for long rides. Quality steel frame for comfort.

Dang, I don't think a Cross Check would be that much slower than a race bike in the real world, and the added comfort and utility would more than make up for the 2 or 3mph loss. (Assuming you have road tires on it, of course)
