I bought a bike today.

It's a late 90's Giant Butte. It is going to be my commuter bike to school and work. Probably the most miles I will put on it is 10 miles a day or so. But I want to get in shape and generally healthier. So this isn't a bike that is going to be ridden hard day in and day out. I am going to add fenders and a rear rack along with some road tires. Thats the plan anyways! I will try and post a pic later!

Any advice or input? I have already read the new commuter faq sticky! Thanks a ton!!

Take it to the Bike shop and have them perform maintenance on it for you. Read https://sheldonbrown.com/, if you want to do the maintenance yourself. Keep it greased up and clean.

I actually bought it from a bike shop. It had a tune-up before they sold it to me. I am really excited to start my commuting experience!

I did basically the same with a full rigid M400 Cannondale. It has worked out reasonable well but it does have a little more of a road bike Geometry. My biggest issue now is Mountain bikes are geared low and I run out of gear when I get on the flat. I'm looking to swap the cranks now to get some more top end speed.

First couple weeks are the hardest (especially if you live where it is hilly). After that you will start getting in shape and the ride will be easier. At that point if you have a computer you will probably be seeing if you can beat the previous days time. Its a fun game.


Like they say "The more you ride the more you can ride".

I was bummed when the less experiance riders I was with today were crying at the 12 mile mark. I understand they are still building up but I was ready for a few more miles. Three of us took off and did another 5 out. Stopped for a Gatorade before heading back. Passed them before they were half way back after we did the extra 5.

We will get them off the soft tail mountain bikes and riding more frequently one day so they can keep up with us.
