Tire inspection
Welcome to the Land of Broken Glass also know as New Zealand.
Had a puncture on the way in, (should have not bragged about the Vittoria Ranndy's in another post :(), now I picked out one large bit of glass that speared the tube near the valve, so much so that the tube is dead, I also pulled out 3 other bits of glass working their way in. I checked the tires a couple of weeks ago for glass burrowers and found none. My question how often do you work your way around a tire cutting bits of glass out? Do you do this at all? I normally do it every month to a fornight depending on how worn the tires are getting. |
I check once a week.

I don't ever look at my tires, except when I think of it and it's been 3 or 4 weeks I'll top up the pressure to 80 PSI. But then again, there's pretty much zero road hazard around here. It's rare that I even see a flash of a small shard of glass.

tbf I've decided to try Schawlbe Marathon pluses after the randonneur's have worn out, even though I've read they are nasty to mount. The amount of glass over here is silly Finally found an online shop that sells them. Thank you Hedgehog cycles :thumb:

My tires are just about worn out so I check weekly or before a long ride. I always check the next time I stop if I so much as see a broken bottle.
As for Marathons they are an absolute pain to mount. Probably took me about 1 hr to mount and it broke one of my cheap plastic tire levers. On the up side since they went on they have not come off and it has been about a year now. If you buy from your local shop I would try sweet talking them into installing them for free. Or pay a few bucks and have the shop mount them. |

Mine have 1-2 thousand miles on them and have been on for about a year. They just started showing some signs of wear 2 or so months ago. I would easily expect 5,000 mi and could see anything up to 10,000. Nothing is completely flat proof but these are a good effort in that direction.
