Weirdest things you've seen on a commute

I always like reading these types of threads and thought about it when I saw this, this morning.

Last night on the commute home on the MUP, I saw what appeared to be a bag of clothes on a bench, but when I got closer, saw it was a guy lying down on a bench. This was around 4:30PM EST. This morning, at around 8:00AM EST I passed by the same bench and the same guy (I assume) was still there. I can't remember for the life of me if was in the same position, but he didn't look weird (read discolored or stiff) or anything. I'll check him out on the commute home if he's still there.

I bike by the county lock up and see some really messed up people being let out. The weirdess thing though has to be the bike impound yard, which probably has between 500 and 1000 bikes all scrunched in like sardines into a fenced off area. They could make these bikes available to people, but they just sit there and rust. I'd give one bike to anyone who promised not to simply sell it.

Well, last Friday on my way home I saw a rat try to run through my wheel. Spokes > Rat. Didn't work out so well for the rat. Fortunately, myself and my wheel had no lasting problems. Then on my way to work yesterday I happened upon a fox standing beside the MUP just nonchalantly watching people go by. Normally see lots of rabbits and squirrels (probably what the fox was looking for too). The trail goes right through town so I guess that's why the fox surprised me a bit.

I once saw a turkey sitting on the hood of a parked car. In the middle of Boston, that's pretty strange. I stopped and watched it for a minute before continuing on my way.

There's this squirrel that has jumped out of a tree right and run right in front of my bike just before my house every afternoon for the last 3 weeks during my commute. Same tree, and I'm 99% sure its the same squirrel

I saw a rather obese and unattractive couple getting frisky in the ditch...on a steep uphill climb. Which reminds me, I need to get better at climbing.

Obviously that squirrel watches too much tv.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL1uFjSbvnA

At least he's smart enough not to try that on cars.

First post in this perfect-timed thread:

I was on the way home yesterday afternoon, and I see a ways down the road a large dark figure on a bike riding towards me. I'm thinking, "Man, it's too warm to be wearing dark pants and a dark long-sleeved shirt and a huge hat..." As we get closer, I start thinking, "Is that?...wait...What? Oh okay, I guess it is."

Yeah, full gorilla costume. On a bike. On a hot day. And he gave me the, "Hey, Guy!" gun-shoot hand motion as we passed.

It was awesome.

This was on Cleveland Ave betwixt Polaris and Main St. for you Columbus folks.

Air Force 1 about a week ago at Dobbins Air Force Base. It just so happened to be taxiing(sp?) for a take-off as I was rolling home on the commute. Lots and lots of cops heading home from the rolling road blocks.

Edit: OK, while not necessarily "wierd" it was at least an uncommon experience. Quite a good view of the big bird, also, I might add. That thing is massive.

A trail of 4 AA batteries, punctuated by a large, neon green sex toy. Not necessarily weird, in and of itself; but I was riding up a fairly busy stretch of road at the time. I couldn't help but wonder how in the heck someone would lose that in the middle of the street.

Posted this before:

A large Oven Ready Chicken unfrozen, just sitting smack bang in the middle of the bike path.

Autistic child wandering the streets in PJ's early in the morning - I called the Police.

Various drunks and Stoners.

Some spooky stuff too but that could have been my imagination.

The coolest thing I've seen was probably a juvenile bald eagle standing in the grass next to the road...I didn't know what it was at first as it was huge, brown and had really thick, "furry" legs. I really can't think of anything too weird though.

Okay, riding the MUP in George Bush Park minding my own business when I found myself being challenged to a race by an armadillo running along the side of the trail. We went neck and neck for about 50 yards before the armadillo decided to jump off into the weeds ...

I saw a guy like that, but he was face down in the dirt. Called 911, and the first cop there recognized him as one of their regulars. I've also surprised a sleeping rabbit that ran to the side and some kind of bird that flew at me after I woke him up.

I saw a farm turkey, that had obviously somehow escaped its way to a Christmas dinner, and was wandering down the cycle path. Enormous great big white thing, in the middle nowhere, on a dark night, suddenly lit up by my lights. Gave me quite a shock I can tell you.

It was around 5 or 6 pm on a saturday, still nice and sunny out. As i was riding home i saw a couple arguing on the sidewalk, then the guy started beating the girl. As i was thinking about yelling or doing something another person came up behind the guy and said "what the f*ck!?!". So the guy who was hitting the girl turned around holding a big knife and started chasing the guy down the street. We stopped and watched the whole thing go down. The knife guy took a couple swings, but never cut the other guy.

Not really on a commute, but on one of my regular rides...

I was riding down by the lake and the next thing I know there were 5 deer running right alongside me. I was in the bike lane and they were taking the regular lane . I slowed down because it was actually somewhat scary and I didn't know what they would do. They slowed down with me. I sped up, they sped up. Then all of a sudden they all crossed my path and disappeared off to the right.

I saw this guy on the way home tonight:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-Ke-miqHs8 (not my video)

He rides all around the city, and you're bound to run into him from time to time.
