How often to change key?
Bike lock keys get worn down, dirty, ect. How often do you switch your keys around?
|
I don't switch keys like that, because I figure then they would wear at the same rate and might leave me keyless one day. So I just use one key until it starts having an issue with the lock, then switch to #2, and so on.
Really this might just be neurosis on my part, but it's an interesting question. |
I save the original key to make duplicates.
Once ran into a problem with my house key from making a dupe from a dupe from a dupe..... |
I keep duplicate keys to everything, but I don't stop using a particular key until I lose it or start having problems with it. Which, in my experience, has never happened. Locks go bad before keys do.
|
get some graphite dry lube spray for the lock as well, to keep it going proper.
|
I bought my Kryptonite lock in 1985... I guess I should switch out the keys soon... just to be sure and all...

Hopefully it isn't that one with the circular key.
But I live in such a high-theft area that I use the lock about 5 or 6 times a year... |
I personally would replace it, but thats your choice.
|
hmm that could possibly explain why my bike locks came with 5 spare keys each...
then again running out of those keys due to losing them.. |
I rarely even need to lock my bike up... so if anyone wanted to break open the lock, they'd have to dig it out of the bottom of my panniers!
I know you can open it with a ball point pen... a can of hairspray... whatever... but I'm not really worried about that. The only people who steal bicycles around my town are kids... and our 12 year olds tend to be less sophisticated than that. They bypass my 25 year old Trek and go straight for the shiny new X-mart ride sitting nearby! :D |
