Question about terrain

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question but I'll go for it anyway. A portion of my route (haven't ridden it yet, hope to start this Friday) is through a nice quite residential neighborhood. Problem is the streets are asphalt with large gravel in it. I don't know what it's called. The gravel is not loose, it's actually embedded in the asphalt. Anyway...the ride is bumpy but I'm more concerned about the effects on my tires. I have a roadbike so have thin, slick tires. Is this type of terrain more conducive to getting flats? I hope not. The neighborhood is a safe alternative to a much busier and narrow road.

It will be fine for your narrow tires.

Narrow tires will be fine but if it's really rough, you may consider wider tires like a 28 or so to smooth out the ride.

That type of paving is called Macadam, or Asphalt Macadam. Like any other surface, it is the loose nails, glass and stuff that you have to be aware of.
