Looking for one of those aluminum coffee mug/thermos that will fit in a bottle cage

Been commuting to graduate school on my old cyclocross bike. Just added fenders and am trying (without luck) to find a rear rack that fits my frame.

I'm a caffeine addict and brew a pot every morning and I'd love to bring it with me on the road to enjoy during classes. I'm carrying quite a bit of stuff each day, and am looking for one of those silver thermos mugs that people bring in their cars. I'm looking for one that would fit in a bottle cage. It's a standard bottle cage.

Anybody know?

They sell stainless thermos-type bottles that fit in bottle cages at a few of the local bike shops here. I imagine that some bike shops in Boston must sell them, too...

Wall mart. 17.5 oz Thermos brand for $10.00. Its a little loose in a bottle holder. Have to tweak the cage a little but it works.

Online shows a 24oz they didn't have at the local store. It is a little taller and a little larger diameter. Measuring a bottle it is closer to the same diameter but it is not going to have the notch to hold it. Might have to modify the cage to hold it.

https://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...Specifications

The Thermos site does not show the same one I have. I have no idea why. It was called a Thermo Carafe Briefcase bottle

This actually comes up fairly often, here is all you will ever need to know:

https://bicyclecoffeesystems.com/

I use the Contigo Mug, have been for over 4 years, i have dropped it, it has been hit by a car and run over and the coloring on mine is worn off from the bottle cage, it looks like hell and still keeps my coffee hotter than any thing else i have tried and has NEVER leaked. I have thrown it in panniers, messengers bags and trunk bags, no problems. I have tried three others, mostly because it is a little expensive to replace and mine looks like hell, i always go back to it. My favorite piece of gear.

Check out Trek's website as their Soho commuter model comes with an metal (aluminum) coffee mug.

https://store.trekbikes.com/jump.jsp?...&bShopOnline=1

I have an '07 Trek Soho that I picked up used so I cannot verify the quality of the mug but if it Trek put their name on it it should be good. It should also fit standard cages too.

Bicycle Coffee Systems!

I second the mention of Bicycle Coffee Systems, great site and I think the information there will be just what you need.

As for me, I did something a little unconventional, I suppose - I got one of the Electra brand cruiser style cupholders which fit on the front handlebars, and hold a normal steel coffee thermos like you might get at your local coffee shop... works fine for me but I don't ride fast at all.

Why don't you just go to Walgreen's or Rite Aid. They've got 'em there for less than ten bucks. Or Starbucks. Every travel mug I've got, whether plastic or stainless, fits just fine in a bottle cage. I do it all the time. The last one I found was at Goodwill for, like 59 cents. Looked new, works great.

I have this mug. Unfortunately it has been unavailable for a year or so. The last time I called about it, the customer service people said it was due to be re-produced last March (never happened). I dropped mine, and cracked the base. I've fixed it with a wire tie, but I'd like to replace it.

Here's my application:

I use the soma holder with an oxo mug. The soma mug is worthless. It leaks into the top and every bump you hit leaves you speckled with coffee. It's also plastic on the inside so coffee doesn't stay hot long at all.

https://www.somafab.com/morningrush.html

This Oxo mug which has a click and seal button is great. It's completely watertight and it fits perfectly in the Soma holder.
Fully stainless, keeps coffee hot for hours.

I have two Oxo mugs, but one is leaking, and I haven't figured out which one. I use them both every morning, but I don't drink en route, so I was thinking of going with a thermos, but then a thermos probably won't fit in my trunk bag. So perhaps I'll just have to test the Oxos more vigorously and replace the bad one. They keep the coffee warm for a while (especially the stainless steel one), but I'd love to have one thermos instead of two cups.

I just can't get over the nasty cleaning issues brought up in the reviews of that OXO mug on Amazon. Yucky!

I never realized so many people drink coffee while they ride.

It just seems so weird to me for some reason

At Target, they sell a Thermos brand thermos: "Thermax", stainless 18 oz, vaccum seal for @ $19. It fits perfect in a bottle cage, and even has a notch that locks it in place. It could not have been made better for the cage. I drink coffee 12 hours post brew--still warm. Sorry no digital camera, or I would post pics.

I carry 2 in 2 cages. I gotta get the handlebar cup to complete the ensemble. Will look for the OXO, unless someone posts a better one...

I use the OXO mug as well. It has never leaked on me and has been great. If you use cream and sugar you'll need to scrub it everyday or else it will get funky. I usually just run some soap and hot water in it when I get home and put a pinch of baking soda in it and let it sit for 30 minutes or so, then wash it as normal.

However I don't drink when I ride. I bring coffee from home in the morning and get $0.50 refills at Starbucks all day long. I drink a lot of coffee too, so I'm probably saving a tree a month by using a reusable mug everyday.

FWIW: the Contigo mug, in silver or black, is on sale now at Target for $17.

My local Costco was selling two-packs of the stainless steel Contigo Autoseal mugs last week for $20... dunno if they're still in stock. I wasn't looking for a cycling accessory at the time, but they seem to fit my bottle cage perfectly and the quality is sweet!

I got mine at target... I think it holds 16oz of coffee... the model name is "TherMax" what I do is have a car mug that fits the bottle cage and I put the thermos in my backpack because it won't spill... have plenty of good coffee when I get to the office...

Take an old ragwool sock, you know, the kind you refuse to wear with birkenstocks, and cut the top off. Slip either the top or bottom part around your thermos and it'll stay in your cage nice and loved. For added durability sew up the frayed ends.

My mother seems to think she has seen these stainless steel mugs at the Eddie Bauer outlet. Best of luck

I haven't done it yet, but it's on my docket for when the weather gets colder. I started thinking about it this week, with the temps in the morning around 15 or below.

So, I have a question for those who do it in all weather.... What do you do on yucky days when there's crud flying everywhere (slush, mud, etc. from cars, etc.)? how do you keep your thermoses and water bottles clean? (and I bet I'm not alone wondering this) That, believe it or not, is my biggest concern. I'm sure I'll find a good thermos. :-)
