Interesting bike commuter photos from China

With the Olympics about to start, MSNBC has a nice photo album showing all the bikes in the city of Beijing.

Those are interesting, It's cool that NBC is pimping the bikes hard in the captions, one reads something like,

"Dumping the more energy efficient and clean transportation in favor of cars" for the "Twilight ride" photo.

Those are some friggin' awesome pictures. A couple gave me shivers. Just goes to show that the bike can be a feasible means of transportation--good enough for the majority of folks in the largest country on Earth--even if we're too addicted to the fuel pump here to notice.

Just imagine how much less space a parking lot for 100 bikes takes up than one for 100 cars. Then multiply that difference by the pollution levels each form of transport creates. Then multiply that by fuel consumption, and the fact that most people drive less than 5 mi per trip. People in Europe can do it. People in China can do it. People all over the world can do this--even Americans, if we'd only try.

I can't find the pedestrian in the last photograph (#17-Crossing guard). I like the rain gear though.

Wow--I loved the policeman scene where they all get new bikes. That's a great way to police a dense city.

Yup...if you're on a Mac, you can click and drag to cover what you want to capture in the screenshot via Apple+Shift+4.

Most choose to do because they cannot afford a car; but also most of the people, if you ask them, are quite aware that pollution comes from cars. There is considerable overlap between being poor and being aware. Ask any poor farmer to recite the Chinese dynasties and he will do so in a flash.

I just love the captions. The photo of the boy riding a bicycle past a sculpture with a horse cut out of the middle has the caption "A boy rides a bicycle past a sculpture with a horse cut out of the middle". Thank God they mentioned that cause I would have never figured that out.

Still can't find the pedestrian in the last photo.

There's not one. There is a cyclist with an umbrella. I think they mistook that for a pedestrian.

Uh,why wasn't the guy RIDING the bike, with the stick and TV balanced on the bike????

I liked the rainwear. Think it would work well for a 5 mile commute?

Bicycles seem more appealing to me when they are in other countries.
