Maxxis Detonator...detonated...

3rd day commuting on these tires (~80 miles total) and the front 700x28 Detonator is up in smoke on the side of the road.

What is the shortest amount of time you've had on a tire before your first flat?

The bell curve sucks, doesn't it? There'll always be someone who gets a flat in the first 100 miles, and another who never does.

Truth. I bought gator skins after a recommendation from the LBS and the next day I got a flat.

Didn't let it bother me.

On my last bike, I had a flat on the first ride, which was less than 10 miles.

Just to define the other tail of that Gaussian distribution...

When I was first started riding fairly often it was on my old 15-year old bike with dry-rotted tires, over nasty torn-up asphalt trails, with about 20 pounds of air in the tires.

I rode like that for like 1000 miles with no flats. How I didn't at least get a snakebite on those trails, I have no idea.

I noticed the tires had low pressure after the first 2 days, so I filled them to 100psi and 8 miles in I was on the rim. No literal combustion, I'm just playing off the terrible marketing decision to name an inflatable tire "Detonator".

Anyone have experience with Kevlar linings inside the tire?

Was it the rim that caused the flat maybe? or the tube between the rim & tire? Or was there actually something going in your tire?

I have the Maxxis Re-fuse I have never uses the Detonator. The Re-fuse actually have a Kevlar belt. I went for a short 3day tour, & put 200miles in that time. The day after I bought them, & still have had no problem sense. I like them a lot, & I would recommend them for anyone.

I am though going to try Continental GatorSkins though on my daily commuter bike.

A friend of mine uses those Mr. Tuffy liner, they seem to me that they are a bigger hassle to get in the tire or to change a flat if it happens, he actually had a nail go throw his GatorSkin, Mr. Tuffy, both sides of the tube, the throw the inner rim wall. I wouldn't was my time with them, but that's just me.

Unless you found an object that pierced the tire, or an obvious gash, I would be willing to bet that the tube was pinched a tiny bit between the rim and the tire bead while mounting. I've had that happen plent of times after putting on new tires, especially if the tire fits tightly on the rim.
