Hit a car, dislocated a toe (wtf?)
 

So last night an oncoming car turned in front of me just as I went through a green light. Not paying enough attention, I went over the bonnet, smashed the windscreen, but escaped injury other than a dislocated toe, of all things.

The bike is a write-off, I believe.

It was a pretty good wake up call to pay more attention, especially after a glass or two of wine.

Glad you're okay. I took a fall today as well, and wrecked a pair of sandals. I can't remember the last time I fell; had to have been at least seven or eight years ago.

Yeah, I imagine I must have somehow hit the front of the car with my foot really hard, bending the toe back before I flew over the top.

The worst bit now: dealing with insurance. And having to call the driver. She was very apologetic at the scene, and it's not like she was doing anything particularly stupid - she just didn't look hard enough, and didn't see me. So I hope her insurance will pay for my bike, and so neither of us is too badly out of pocket.

PS Best place in the world to get involved in a car accident: Victoria, Australia. The TAC (transport accident commission) pays for everything medical: ambulance, emergency treatment, even ongoing treatment (minus $500), and even missed work income (minus 5 days).

Car registrations, I think. Meaning, if you ride a bike *instead of* a car, you're way ahead.

Btw, here's a photo of the bike. The fork sheared all the way through, apparently without even bending. The front wheel is pretty bent, not sure if it's salvageable. The rest of the bike is apparently unscathed (rear derailleur may be bent, haven't checked too much).

The car? Written off. Seriously. Mangled bonnet, smashed windscreen, headlights, etc, added up to $2500-3000, more than the value of the car, apparently.

Definitely one for the books: cyclist vs car, and the car came off worse. In dollar terms anyway.
