Alfine on an "off the rack" bike in the US?

I've looked, and can't seem to find anything. Can anyone enlighten me?

Civia Hyland - for about 2.5 times the cost of the Giant.

Jamis Commuter 4 comes with Alfine as standard also.

The Shimano employee who decided to include a derailleur in the Alfine package needs a punch to the neck.

As a plus, this bicycle can fold up to stash in your closet (or public transportation, if you can handle the bulk/weight) :)

It doesn't look like a derailleur to me. However, it does look like a chain tensioner, which you would need in order to shift between the two front chain rings :)

You're supposed to know what I meant to type, not what I actually typed.

I agree w/you. They used to offer the Alfine w/their rear disc setup but I don't see that option.

BTW, neither does the Soho. Did you notice that one?

bjoerges stated that the 2008 Trek Soho 4.0 had Alfine components, which was correct.

As an aside, he mentioned that the 2009 Soho had changed.

-------

Nothing to correct there, thanks for playing. Don't worry, you got to pimp your shaft drive. All we need now is a reason for the guy to come in pimping his airless tires and we're set.

It is much better optioned than the Giant, however. Giant reduced the spec: they aren't offering the full Alfine build which also includes the Alfine hydraulic brakes and crank. they put a cheaper crank and Tektro mechanical discs on their bike.

The "derailleur" you mention is an optional chain tensioner for those building on bikes with vertical rear dropouts without an eccentric bottom bracket to de-tension the chain.

+1 I have one of these bikes for commuting and really like it. Shifting is a breeze, the brakes are pretty good and the bike is quite comfortable on short and longer rides. My commute is 22 miles each way and this bike handles it quite well.

Thanks for assuming my ignorance. It was a typo, as referenced by my subsequent post.

Anyway, it still annoys me as I consider the simpler chainline to be a plus of IGH bikes. I understand that this makes it easier for manufacturers to implement it on more models, but I personally wouldn't buy an Alfine bike that used the tensioner.

And others would. I just dont see the big deal. Its an option. Dont buy it. But it allows for greater flexibility of implementations on existing bikes like my hybrid I converted a few months back. So am thankful a tensioner is in the pkg so to speak.

Nah, it's for those two chain rings up front. It's a shame they don't have the gear inches listed on that. With the two chain rings it's gotta be a pretty wide range.

Hm. Bitter and resentful while promoting acts of violence.

I'm sorry you have such a negative outlook. I hope things improve for you.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone. The Civia comes close to what I would want, but i think it is too expensive.
