Another commuter racing thread.

Hello my name is BroadSTPhilly and I am a raceaholic. I was riding the MUP this morning (for those in Philly the paved part of the Wissahickon that leads to Kelly Drive) and a hear a cyclist say something to me. This was right after a wooden bridge that I had slowed down for because I wiped out on it recently. Initially I sped up instintively because no one has ever said anything to me on my commute before that was not a request for my bike or my money. I am in the habit of ignoring these requests and speeding up. So I realize that this guy most have been saying on you left or something.

The race is on. We are doing about 22 or 23 mph. It still 7 miles to the office and its Friday and I am tired. I don't really want to race but now that this rider is here I can't just slow down and let him pass. I am compelled to race. Anyway we are still going at it until I lose him at the falls bridge. Ah I won I am happy I slow down a little. Whoops there he is again right on my tale at the Columbia bridge. So I lead all the way to end of Kelly drive and then I let him pull me around the Art musuem. As we pass the light right in front of the Art museum I gather one last burst and I hit the shoot around the curve onto the Ben Franklin Parkway at 26 mph. I keep it up all the way down to 17th where thankfully I work. He was still only a block behind me when I turned. Now I am more tired. This is ridiculous. But also fun.

It is ridiculously fun. I have a strong rider who blows by my regularly on his mountain bike. So here I am on my skinny tired single speed dressed like a roadie and we start going at it. Great fun yet we have never said a word to each other. Just trade places and then go our separate ways at the end.

Why don't you enter a real race instead of competing in the imaginary races on a MUP.

I wish there were other riders on my commute I could fake-race. Even better if we're both racing

Ah well. One day I'll be strong enough a rider for a real race. Then I'll get laughed at for my hairy legs and kinda road-like "performance hybrid" bike. :(

BroadSTPhilly 08-29-08 12:05 PM

I don't have the time to be honest.

Pig_Chaser 08-29-08 12:59 PM

I've never had a good one and i'm game. I've only ever passed knobby tired mountain bike riders, oh and some guy on a single speed. There was that one full bore roadie but the tables were turned there and i didn't give him much of a challenge.

unkchunk 08-29-08 01:31 PM

Uh sir... you dropped your wallet. Sir?

Becuase there is nothing like street racing!

I raced a motorcycle the other day. He challenged me at a deserted red light.

I sprinted like crazy and the road went up a hill. About the crest of the hill he cranked it and burned me (he was pacing me up the hill - I think he just wanted to see if I'd do it and it was pretty obvious he was forking with me), but I really really really busted it up that hill.

Dropped you wallet. Now that's funny.

Riding is fun. Riding fast is more fun. :)

apricissimus 08-29-08 02:09 PM

Every so often I wind up in a mini peleton of four or five people really haulin' ass on our ways to work. I love it. It's a ton of fun.

I sometimes think that a lot of BF posters forget how much fun riding a bike can be :)

DataJunkie 08-29-08 02:14 PM

I encountered mini groups a couple times yesterday. I hate riding close to people I do not know and actually either slowed down or sped up to get away from the group. That and I was feeling anti social.
Members of my club I will ride very close to.

At the end of my commute yesterday an older scooter pulled up beside me. I was tired and was going to go slow just so he could get in front so I didn't have to smell his POS or hear that nasty high RPM weak @ss whine. But once I made a few revolutions on green, I kind of glanced at him, him at me, and it was on. I got up to about 25 mph, but couldn't sustain because my legs were jello after the hill climb and he finally got up to 35'ish and passed me up. Then he pulled up the next street and pulled U-turn and it looked like he was waiting for me so we could go again, but I caught the green and he was stuck waiting for the right. That was the last light for quite a ways and I just cruised it easy home.

I like to race cars on part of my commute (25 mph limit, curvy, scenic). My self imposed rule is no blocking. I only hold them off by speed.

Once, I won! I passed 3 cars, passed by 2, in 10 miles(and held one off for a couple hard miles at the end). One "passee" was towing a car, one was the towee, and one was an old couple going about 15; still...

Pointless fun.

Right....

I must be an old man because I have no desire to race anyone. That adrenaline rush is not worth being hot sweaty and tired.

Being hot, sweaty, and tired is part of the fun. :thumb:

That reminds me of another activity that when done right is hot, sweaty, and tiring.

Yes of course, since we all have no life and time on our hands like you.

Not sure what you have against having a little harmless not-so-serious fun.

I'd been feeling pretty good about myself lately because i cracked a guy at least 10 years my junior in a similar "race". I was on my mostly-upright ex-MTB racked and fendered commuter and he was on a Cervelo Soloist. He's a commuter but wears spandex, has shaved legs and tattoos on his calves. He moved from his nice MTB to that to-die-for Cervelo I think because I trounced him a couple of times (not saying he bought it on my account, just that I made him bust it out for his commute). I was feeling like King ***** on Turd Mountain. Then last week some guy caught and passed me riding a full-suspension Huffy and holding an open Budweiser Tall-Boy in his hand. D'oh! (I see the guy all the time at all times of day all over town. I don't think he has a job - he just spends all his time riding his bike and drinking beer. Shows what riding your bike all the time does though)

Nothing.

I'll admit, I kind of like MUP racing...but you might want to make sure the competitor in question actually wants to engage in that sort of thing. For example, I don't mind somebody passing me, but the whole "pass and slow down" thing you seem to be doing can be seriously annoying. I had some kid do about the same thing to me a couple of weeks ago, and the last time he passed me as he was slowing down, damn near clipping my front wheel. Not cool.

When I pass someone, I pass 'em hard and maintain speed. I very rarely see the same person twice. If someone's in front of me, I don't pass them unless I'm pretty danged sure I'll be able to maintain a faster speed if I pass them.

If I had Photoshop skills, and time, I would have created an image of a guy on a commuter bike racing a girl on a pink bike with streamers. :roflmao2:
