Ode to the blinkie
Stolen from a friend who stole it from the Marinies.
This is my blinkie. There are many like it but this one is mine. My blinkie is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My blinkie, without me is useless. Without my blinkie, I am useless. I must secure my blinkie. I must mount my blinkie so that is is blinking at any cager who is trying to kill me. I must blink at him before he runs me over. April is the cruellest month, breeding
Blinkies out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and traffic, stirring
Dull Cateyes with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful helmet covers, feeding
A little life with dried innertubes.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of TriFlow; we stopped in the bike lane,
And went on in sunlight, into the intersection,
And drank Gatorade, and talked for an hour...

Once more unto the breach, dear blinkie, once more;
Or block traffic with our bike-commuting dead.
In traffic there's nothing so becomes a rider
As flashing LEDs and not getting buzzed:
But when the blast of horns blow in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the cager;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the finger,
Disguise fair nature with u-lock justice;
Then lend that guy a terrible stare;
Let pry through the cellphone attached to his ear
Like the brass cannondale; let the protective eyewear o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a pissed-off messenger
Scream obscenities at the minivan that cut him off,
Fueled by coffee and smokes.
Now set the rack and mount the pannier,
Hold hard the handlebar and crank up your cadence
To your full speed. On, on, you noblest rider...
