chilly ride and ears hurting
 

Anyone else experience sort of deep aching ears after riding in the chilly weather without a face mask or anything?

My ears have hurt, but I don't know if its that same thing you're experiencing.

Whenever my ears have hurt, it never persisted after after arriving indoors and warming up. If your ears still hurt after that, I'd suggest seeing the doc.

Aye, chilly: 35-40 degree's or under... there is some residual ache for about 30 minutes after warming up. Though, I have discovered that chewing gum while riding actually prevents the achey ears somewhat effectively (sp?). I was just curious what other's experience was.

yep - had it this morning as it had been warmer here the last week but was again cold (about 29F), so i had forgotten my headband.

the BEST is a windproof headband - i put it on around the neck, then put on helmet, then slide it back up over the ears - i use this for below 30F or so.

i also have a small special "under-the-helmet" skull cap that i wear when it's not soo cold - say 25F to 40F.

but yeah, it's kind of like a headache but in a different part of the head. i think the ears go numb so you feel the "pain" in the head -- either as it's cold too or from the nerves. no idea, but goes away, although it is annoying.

Check out these guys they make ear warmers that wrap around your head so they don't interfere with your helmet. They have lots of styles, like windpro ones, fleece, etc. I have them and they work very well.

Bell has a new "commuter"/"metro" helmet that was optional ear warmers that attach to the helmet -- now that's pretty nifty... I usually wear a half mask that covers my ears, but I couldn't find it this morning.

They are awesome. I carry one in my jersey pocket year round and am ready for anything.

I usually just wear a regular cycle cap under my helmet but when gets down below freezing, I have wool headband that does the trick. A few weeks ago, I forgot my cap on a morning that was about 26F, the ears were OK, but on a fast descent, I ended up with an "ice cream" type headache for a few minutes.

I have a nice Sugoi hat that fits under my helmet for these temps...

My earlobes tend to hurt a bit after cold rides. Keep them covered, that should help.
