Epic Commute Fail

I was taking my foul weather beater out for a shakedown commute today. I was having a lovely ride home at night along the MUP, marveling at how well a pair of Fenix L2D Q5s illuminate at the speed I go. And all of a sudden, I see something FLYING DOWN AT ME from above.

I holler "what the fuh--"WHAM a freaking BAT slams into my helmet just above my eyes and falls to the ground.

Poor little guy didn't make it.

Other than that it was a particularly lovely ride. Is this a common commute mishap?
Hop

PS it went kind of like this. Haha!

Your title says "epic commute fail."

What makes you certain the bat was on his way to work?

My head is quite fine. The THWACK was really loud, but no apparent damage to the helmet except some spattered, dried blood. I rather think it makes me look rogue-ish.

Did you have some kind of stealth helmet that didn't show up on the bat's echolocation radar?

Nope, just a cheap $10 bell helmet with reflective tape all over it. I like to think that I was going so fast it distorted the sound waves around me. ...yeah! That's the ticket!

what an odd thing to happen.

I'll take being hit & stung by a bee at 35mph over being hit by a bat though. I got stung for the second time today on a long descent through a canyon.

I'm led to understand that he still cannot believe it's not butter, even after the bird incident.

Ooooh, the bird cut a gash on his nose...I always thought that was the bird's blood, and the bird exploded upon impact with his face.

were you dresssed like a big mosquito, or moth? I'll bet that poor bat went to his (or her) death thinking they were getting the biggest meal of its all too short life. You are a sadistic jerk

Kinda like nostrils being so cavernous the poor bat thought it was entering his or her bat cave. Or a head so big, try as s/he might the poor bat couldn't avoid it and slammed right in.

If it makes you feel any better that bat may just have been stunned. I've seen them hit before and then wake up after a few minutes.

I was once attacked by an owl while I was jogging at night. Nocturnal animals can be such bast*rds.

Long ago, on summer nights we got under our small-town streetlights and threw rocks & gravel at bats. It was *very* rare to knock one down though- I never did. They're usually pretty good at dodging stuff.

I think you're right, you must be going supersonic, gettin' to 'em before their sonar can bounce back. Yeah, that's it!

Y'know- there may be a poem in there somewhere. Mebbe somethin' kinda snooty, like a haiku:
"Bat blood on my helmet..." I'll leave the rest to others.
