'87 Trek 400. I only roll on American Iron (But I stop myself using Japanese alloys).

My 20 year old ride to work clunker just became a 40+ year old steed.

Grim 05-16-11 08:43 PM

My $40 CL Trek 420 Beater. Been riding the hell out of it of late leaving the Cannondales at home collecting dust.

Its a cosmetic basket case. paint is all chipped to hell. Looks like it was regularly stuck on a rack with other bikes with the peddles rubbing the seat and down tubes chipping the hell out of the paint. Somebody took the time to put some clear something on the chips.

Thing rides sweet and climbs like a goat! Guy I bought it from just bought a nicer bike. His buddy was a Bike Mechanic and built it and gave it to him so he had no real value of what he had. His Buddy probably smacked the crap out of him when he found out what he sold it for. Was nicely upgraded when I bought it. Stock it came with a Mallard Helocomatic 6 speed speed on Weinmann rims with Simplex derailleurs. It was upgraded to Polished 700c CR18 rims on 7 Speed 105 hubs, Acera derailleurs and Shimano Aero levers. I thew a set of Deore LX Derailleurs on it off a flipper and a set of Shimano indexed 7 speed bar ends I had in the parts bin. Also put a Fitzik Pave' saddle on it. It also now has Campus peddles (one side platform the other SPD) on it. It got a set of 700x28 Conti Ultra Sports last week when the side wall started to let go.

Thinking about painting it but I like the fact that it looks like hell. It doesn't worry me so much locking it up places.

It was quite fun showing up with it at a Moderate 30 mile ride with it in cargo shorts and a golf shirt when the majority of the group was in superhero outfits with Carbon wonder $2k bikes. It was a ball shooting up hills with the 12-30 mountain cassette passing all the weekend riders suffering with 12-23 9 speeds LOL.

This is Blue Bike, a 1981 Miyata Ridge Runner converted to a single speed commuter, found on Craigslist for $75http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=214174. I ride it all the time I can.

Did someone say old clunker? Currently I ride a 1987 model Schwinn World Sport. Craigslist find, cost me $30 plus about $80 in new parts (tires, cables, tape, etc.). Rides like a dream, but I can't seem to get comfortable with these bars. Originally I chopped the drops and flipped them (po' man's bullhorns!) but regretted not having a drop position. Bought a cheap set of drops, and I just don't like them. I would like to swap them out for a more ergo-style drop bar, but I'm cheap. I'll probably just chop these again until I can muster up a few bucks for an upgrade.

Just picked this up the other day for $75 off of CL. Its a 1987 Diamondback Topanga. Here it is in it's non-commuting form:

And here it is in front of a park on my way to work this morning (6 mile round trip with a 12.5% grade at the end on the way home):

I notice yoder has the same rack as mine came with. It also has steel fenders off an old Schwinn 3 speed.

I rode a 60 year old clunker to work yesterday... need to get a handlebar bag so I don't need to carry my backpack and think my Blackburn should work although a period correct canvas bag would be the shizzle and need to work on that.

This bike eats up bad roads...

My Shasta is still going strong and has become my primary commuter and utility bike after I sold my Trek 7500 hybrid... restored it to near original with an 18 speed drive and XT level parts from the same era instead of the stock Exage (I have a complete group of this).

It also likes to hang out with my trailer a good deal... it is such a smooth and comfortable bike to ride and am very pleased with the Schwalbe Silento tyres I fitted which give up a little road speed to the Hurricanes I was running but more than make up for in the ride department.

That looks like it could have come off the Rivendell production line yesterday. The fence is a nice back drop for that bike.

Not a commuter yet but it is my daily bike route bike that I average 30-40 miles a week on exercising.

My newest commuting bike is c. 40 years old. The oldest is 70 years old. For many years, while I had small kids to transport, I only rode old Swedish 1-speeds. I enjoy their riding style, they're very well built, and you can varry most of your furniture PLUS a couple of kids on them :P. Most of them are similar to models shown here http://cykelhistoriska.se/cyklarc1.htm.

Still, it was nice to get back on lightweights again. I actually like all manners of cycling: fast as well as slow and meandering. :)

Time to rejuvenate this thread.

This bike turned 50 this year. It's only one year younger than I am.

Now this is a clunker!!!

Although I can see it would be pretty bomb proof.... just judging by the thickness of the spokes. It looks indestructible :)

My clunker... 1987 fuji with some mods.
