Old Bike
Thats awesome, I wish I had kept mine from my childhood!
|
Well the days of having to ride the 25 year old clunker to are almost at an end. I've been riding my Raleigh Marathon since I pulled her out of a dumpster in December. About that same time I found out the cranks on my normal commuter were recalled by Shimano. I took it over to the LBS on Friday for the replacement of the recalled cranks and should get it back this week. So I'll shift from a 25 year old clunker to a 15 year old clunker (which happens to be my newest bike).
|
Every bike I own is a twenty year old clunker. How am I supposed to get to work if I don't ride one?

This bike is very special to me, My great grandmother who was a depression era woman bought this for my dad when he was in his late teens, and I've always noticed it in the shed as i grew up and never thought anything of it. One day I realized it's sentimental value, and potential and asked my dad for it. It's taken me about 6 months to get it where it's at, and it still needs some more work, but it takes me on my 3 mile round trip to work almost everyday here. also lots of weekend rides! I've been having dreams of taking it with me abroad to ride, but I'd be scared of damage while shipping and such, but we'll see. |
I have a Crescent, too. I wish mine had that much trail in the fork - I get some nasty toe-verlap. |
First commute of spring today on my 1984 Raleigh Alyeska, which I don't ride in the winter. New and longer stem - I've been wanting to ride it more upright. Put the fenders on last fall. Rides like velvet. The Buick New Yorker of bikes. Bought this new and lots on it is original - it has been ridden hard only in the first couple of years and last couple of years of its existence. I can't imagine what someone would have to pay to get it from me.

My 1982 Bianchi Sport SS

Here is my old 1982 Bianchi Sport SS that I've done and redone many times over the years (including the paint job as you can see). The last redo was last winter. I love this bike, I've put a lot of miles on her.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/3...eskaspring.jpg http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/7...skaspring2.jpg I rode this to work Friday last week. I think I've posted to this thread before, but Friday was the first commute sporting new Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tires. It also has that "Chrysler New Yorker" feel. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...1/100_3490.jpg 1966 Raleigh DL-1 Tourist. |
Haha - I knew Chrysler made the New Yorker, that was a slip - and yet "Buick New Yorker" somehow conveys exactly what I mean...
Old Raleighs rule. |
Here's my commuting bike - well, my only bike. Its an early 80's Ross Mt. Saint Helen's, with a chrome/moly frame that is more like a touring size for me - just fine, since I don't ride mountains. I should have cleaned off the weekend trail slime, but I have no shame. I love this bike. Got it at a police auction, and have put maybe $100 into replacement parts.

Still old but no longer a clunker...

I just added a rack and fenders to my 1986 Schwinn World over the weekend. It took me some time to figure out that the eyelets are 6mm and not 5mm, but after a trip to Home Depot for some bolts it was smooth sailing.

I thought I was the only one rocking the heinous green stem/bar combo I stopped at a shoe repair shop yesterday, across from a pretty nice looking bicycle shop. I don't hang out in bike stores, but wandered in to look at panniers. There was a Scott Ascent mountain bike that looked really good - FAT tires, hydraulic discs, $750. I guess if I was buying a new one, I'd be tempted - though it doesn't seem to be in their current catalog. Point is, I went home and hopped on my black and green monster and so much appreciated it! So much that I rode a bit extra. |
I bought my first road bike for commuting in 1974. Kept that one 20 years. Then my roadie buds started upgrading every few years and giving me their old bikes (less the wheels sometimes). So every road bike I have ever owned (I'm 51 now) since 1974 was/is a hand-me-down.
This is the latest love of my life. 1989 Miyata. Aluminum main triangle with steel seat and chain stays. The owner was partly disabled and gave it to me. Later, he decided he wanted a trike, so I bought it for him. Technically then, this bike cost me $300US. 20 years old and still fast as hell: http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...1&d=1238764763 |

I just rescued a 1971 Schwinn Super Sport from my grandparent's house and started commuting this week. I have a 14 mile round trip which is still a bit of a challenge. Add to that a freak cold snap here in Florida where it was 32 degrees when I set out this morning. The bike is in pretty good shape, I'm the one that needs the most work, I haven't ridden a bike in 20 years.

I rode my 72-73 Columbia Tourist V to work today. I'm thinking she wants new tires. :)

'81 Fuji

Here's my '81 Fuji Supreme. Messing around with this bike and swapping parts back an forth has been my first foray into bicycle mechanics (if you can call it that). I think I'll settle on the current format for a while, as it is working great for my commute.
