Expensive bike abandoned in cage at work?
 

We have two bike cages in the parking garage where I work. This building just opened a few months ago, and I moved in here just over 2 months ago. Someone hung an electric assist bike, fairly new and pretty nice, up on a wall rack in one of the cages and left it there, and it hasen't moved since I've been working here.

I use these cages every day. That fine bike is covered with dust now. Both of the tires are flat. Another odd thing is that it is not locked, but it has a huge, burly lock in the holster on the frame. And both of the tires are flat.

Last week someone put a leaflet for a public storage company in the spokes. Possibly a member of the facilities staff.

I thought they might have flattened the tires to prevent theft, but why not just lock it, too? The lock is there, unused. And anyone with a combination to the cage can just drive off with it or walk it out of there.

Strange.

Somebody needs to call somebody...

Maybe his wife told him to get it out of the garage?

Contact building management if it's taking up needed space, otherwise leave it be. There was an "abandoned bike" in our bike cage, there for over 2 years, dust coated. Recently they cleaned up the bike cage area and what do you know, that bike was removed before the cleaning date, must have been the owner (U-locked). Then, this week, that same bike showed up AGAIN, with a new seat and apparently tuned up. But it hasn't moved since Monday, so now we are timing the dust build up again.

Perhaps it's kept there in reserve for something.

Could be someone left it there for emergency transportation if he misses the last bus, car pool, or car doesn't start. Can't explain no lock, but apparently hasn't needed one in the cage, so far.

Someone is using the cage as free storage. Their garage is probably too full of crap to bring it home.

Yeah, but if it's there for emergency, why are both of the tires flattened?

There are a couple of folks that leave their bikes unlocked in the cages. One or two. Most lock them, though. Supposedly only those that have bikes and have applied for access have the code to the door. Haven't heard of any problems yet.

There is this thing called a pump....

It could be a stolen bike that was left there by the thief.

It's mine for when the zombie apocalypse strikes and there won't be any more refined gas around. That reminds me, I need to get a pump for it...

Yes, the building managers actually keep one in each of the cages for employees to use.
