Product Development

Hello! I am a student in Industrial Design, working with a consumer electronics company called Cobra. They are looking to expand there product line
and customer base. They work primarily in personal communications. We
feel that there may be opportunity in cycling. If anyone would respond to
the following questions about cycling I would greatly appreciate it. This company is looking
go into production with all viable ideas within the year. Your feedback could directly influence
the development of a new product for the bicycle. We are in the initial phases of development and are trying to find direction.

What is the most important part of the spirit of cycling?

What do you expect out of your gear?

Do you feel that there is a place for electronic communication while riding? If so, describe.

If so. What are your main concerns and needs for communication on the bike?

Thanks for you time. I want to come back here to post threads as our product moves along. And hopefully this online community will help us make something worthwhile.

The only thing I can think of is a small, light box that broadcasts "F Off" in an Earth shaking Wizard of Oz voice with the touch of a button.

edit: oh, a cell phone jammer would be handy.

1. Freedom
2. I expect it to solve a problem.
3. Probably not. If there is it might be short range communication between club riders riding in a paceline. That being said I think that much of the enjoyment of riding comes out of the lack of verbal communication.
4. None

I'm also an industrial design student. You could work on your user interview skills a bit-- people are less likely to provide you with useful information if you start out by disregarding the forum rules (multiposting).

Are you interested in designing some kind of earpiece to facilitate communication between riders? It's difficult to speak to other riders who aren't adjacent to you while riding quickly due to the wind noise, which can be problematic when you need to discuss what route to take or how to approach an obstacle. A way of locating other riders if you get separated from a group may also be helpful.

I don't think there's any need for a product of this type, and there are non-cycling-specific ways of accomplishing the same thing, but this is still a useful enough idea that people would be interested in it.

Some sort of device that allows me to read other peoples minds.

There's your billion dollar idea. Now get to work.

What is the most important part of the spirit of cycling?
freedom. doing whatever i want at the time.

What do you expect out of your gear?
to work when i need it to. if its going to fail it better not fail right when i need it to.

Do you feel that there is a place for electronic communication while riding? If so, describe.
the most i would think that anyone would need are some two way radios that can be dropped in a pocket or mounted on the bike for group riding. you can always get a headset for them and that should be it

If so. What are your main concerns and needs for communication on the bike?
dont need any. i ride by myself most of the time

Communication...like some sort of device that would let me cycle and talk. Like a cycly-talky. And an earpiece/microphone combination that doesn't require wires. That might take a bit of research to figure out how to remove the wires. But once you get this "wireless cycly-talky" set up you're golden.

Oh, wait. They have them: https://www.callpod.com/products/dragon And they even come in carbon fiber, so just slap a "cycling" label on them and raise the cost another couple hundred dollars.

Not an AI.

Thanks so much to all of you for your feedback. I again apologize for the multi-posting. Won't happen again. I was trying to use the scattergun approach and narrow from there. Anywho... I also wanted you to know that this is not an AI and we really are listening. A new post with some new product directions and thought will follow. Thanks again for you feedback folks.

How about we take the Dragon V2 and make it even more hands free. There could be voice activated calling and answering. Or it could be gesture based, like cocking you head to the side ends a call.

Just what we need; we have car drivers distracted by communications devices while driving. Now we're going to have cyclists riding in front of cars because they're busy yakking.

The most communications gear that I want is a cell phone that's not too accessible so I'm not tempted to use it while riding. Exactly what I want when I'm in the car too.

The most important thing I can think of to increase safety and enjoyment of cycling would be to legally require all cell phones to be disabled if they're moving more than 10 MPH. Maybe you could override it once per month; everyone has real emergencies once in a while. Emergency personnel might be excluded. This is entirely workable with current technology.

I don't know about other riders, but I'm capable of doing all the communication I need to while underway with a wave and a smile...and the occasional middle digit...not exactly "hands free" but free none the less.

I like the comment about how it's legal to sell them but not to use them in the UK. Reminds me of the hash conversation from Pulp Fiction.

How about built in LED headlights and tailights powered by the cranks.

Bicycles can be useful tools.

They can free one from complete dependence from a car. Making one car light or for some car free.

This may or may not be the type of communication you had in mind, but it would be nice to have a red light that went on in the back of my bike every time I engaged my brakes. Directional lights would be cool, too.

Don't forget the flashbang launcher, so you can drop a nice little package of "wake up and pay attention to the f'in road" right through an open sunroof.

Hey, I can dream...

I've got a cell phone. Don't need any commo gear.

But I have a better idea for a product though: a device that will trigger traffic signals.

I want a device that will let you do virtual reality texting while riding. It should also include a navigation module that steers the bike while you text.

Those have been available for quite a while. They just aren't sold to the public.

A sonic disruptor that can shatter all the blacked out windows that the idiot drivers of Hummers, Escalades, Chrysler 300s, and BMW M series cars seem to favour.

I thought so. I was just trying to be helpful.

@ OP: Here's another idea- Take a Bluetooth enabled throat microphone linked to a vocal synthesizer paired to a loud emitter (AirZound). Set the sensitivity of the mic to normal, not whisper or muttering. Think hands-free bullhorn.
