I commuted in that mess this morning, mostly cuz I missed the part about 50 mph wind gusts. My bike needed a good cleaning too.

Therein lies the other reasons I won't commute on a day like today. Stiff crosswinds like that could easily mean a dangerous wipeout (I was blown *on to the sidewalk* a few days ago!). Also I don't like cleaning the bike!

I would, but not without good rain gear and eye protection. Gravel in a 55-mph gust can be painful. (And I have the option of a MUP for 95% of my commute so I don't get blown into cars.)
For me, the gear would be Gore-Tex hiking boots, ankle gaiters, thick tights, bib shorts, long-sleeved jersey, Showers Pass rain jacket, goggles, skullcap, helmet. And if the temperature dropped another ten degrees, a neck gaiter.

No wind. Rain fell straight down. I do have a bunch of buildings protecting me, but even at the intersections I didn't feel a breeze.

I did it, with cheap Nashbar rain gear and a helmet cover.... wasn't much fun but no problem. It poured the whole ride to the station, got there a little after 6 AM. I kept my rain gear on on the train, mostly because I expected the train ride to be cold, and it was. Turned out the train was way late, so standing on the platform in my rain gear was better than standing there without it. By the time I got to NYC , 7:15, there was no rain falling but it was still dark.
All told... uneventful commute. Not great. Not awful. I put my shoes in front of the dehumidifier for a couple hours, they're fine now.
Have not looked out the window. The ride home may not be much fun ....

I can deal with rain, it's the winds off Lake Erie that are a B**ch! Especially downtown where the streets and buildings will either create a wind tunnel or make it swirl and you don't know what direction you'll get hit from next.
In those kind of conditions (winds 40 - 60) I seriously ponder going out or not, have done it, didn't always like it.

I was all set to bike in today, but the rain was coming down in sheets this morning in Cleveland. Naturally, when I hopped in the car and rode for a mile or two it turned to a sprinkle.
I went to the fitness center and hopped on a recumbant. Not nearly as fun, but I liked being hooked up to the heart meter. Got in my target zone for quite a while. I learned that I need to push myself more on my morning rides!

I saw the wind forecast in Boston today but rode to work today anyway. It was mild and drizzling in the morning (it has been in the mid-30's a few mornings already this fall, but today it was in the high 40's).
I wore my work clothes as usual (lined wool dress slacks, light wool sweater) with waterproof cycling jacket, pants, and helmet cover. I was a bit too warm with the rain pants but I didn't want to get my clothes wet. I have fenders and a chain guard.
The rain doesn't keep me off the bike, but if the wind were much over 20mph I think I'd walk to the "T" instead.

I was out in the front end of that as it was coming through Boston. I managed to get to work before any of the rain or wind started. Unfortunately, my son's school called mid-morning and said that he had come down with something and that I needed to come get him. It was VERY wet on the way back home, but the wind hadn't kicked up too badly. I got pretty wet, but then again, I was in a hurry and didn't break out the heavy duty rain gear before leaving for home. The rain gear stayed nice and dry in the Ortlieb pannier .

No problem.
Hit a lull on the way in. Easy peasey, except for the downed power line.
Windy but dry on the way back.
Went better than expected.
Clothes worn:
Endura eVent jacket and pants, Metro helmet with liner and cover, Smith Moab H/P glasses, Windstopper balaclava, Amfib gloves, wool vest, Sugoi Firewall jacket, shants, long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys, bike shorts, knee warmers, heavy wool socks, and Lake MX 302s.
On the way home I skipped the rain jacket but wore the rain pants.

I'm currently at 37F - rode home in a steady 24 mph with 30 mph gusts that were swirling (oh now they were fun!) but it was dry, and yet it was forecasted to be be wet turning to snow this afternoon. Now later on tonite it's finally going to hit - supposedly 1" accumulation - and tomorrow is about 36F with 20 mph winds and periodic snow.
HOO-HAW - it's here. However, it's not yet the time to try out the new studs and I'm not putting on the old knobbies, with the new ones coming in here Friday so I'm transferring the lights, etc over to my off-road FS toy with the nice knobbies and taking that to work tomorrow (There SHALL be no falling down on pavement with that!). Clothing wise - it's only my feet with some mediocre protection over my shoes that need updating as I've spent the past several years accumulating a good winter wardrobe.
I'm hitting the street!!!

I commuted in it yesterday down the west side pathway from Dyckman to 15th st.
The morning was fine, although raining hard, but the temperature was pretty comfortable. Coming home it was very windy and still raining a bit but far colder.
Anyways, I had fun both ways still and wore this:
a head band over the ears that blocks most of the wind and insulates a bit.
clear lens m frames
long sleeve regular weight jersey
Ultra light rain jacket
soft shell gloves (not waterproof) they dried during the day, but if I do more rain riding I'll need to find the waterproof ski gloves.
regular bib shorts, knee warmers, wool socks
over all that some gore-tex xcr rain pants with reflective velcro strips on the legs to hold them away from the chain, etc.
mountain bike shoes - no covers, temp wasn't low enough since it's only about 40 minutes. my feet got really wet both ways. i was thinking I should get some flat pedals and wear my hiking boots for days like this.

The ride home last night was a major let down. The rain had stopped completely! So much for the weather forecast.

I partially redeemed myself today, riding into a sustained 20-25mph headwind. Cost me nearly 10 minutes extra time! "RealFeel" temp was below freezing, apparently, though it didn't feel that bad. Since we're on the "what I wore" tip, I put on regular bike shorts w/ wool knee warmers, thin sleeveless base layer, SS jersey w/ wool arm warmers, nylon shell jacket, wool socks with toe covers on the bike shoes, cycling cap, Windstopper gloves and my FC Barcelona stretchy-tube-o-synthetic-fabric as a neck gaiter. My extermities were a bit chilly but it was very manageable. It was weird, though, to be in climbing gears at 12mph on stretches where I'd normally be cruising at 19-20mph.

The forecast for this morning was 2-4 inches of snow, but I looked at the synoptic chart yesterday afternoon and declared I'd be surprised if we got even half an inch. We got none.

Question, to those of you who rode in that... what about your feet? My feet, LLBean goretex shoes notwithstanding, were thoroughly soaked. Suggestions?

Regardless of how waterproof a pair of shoes may be, it is necessary to protect the socks and legs in really wet conditions. Otherwise, the water will just wick right down into the shoes.

It's so weird being in summer atm, and seeing all these messages about snow and wind and rain. Here was overcast and threatening to rain, but my biggest problem was overheating in the warm, muggy conditions. Heh.

We just got back from a couple of weeks in Kiwiland and 3 days in Sydney. I joked that we went from 30C to 30F! But it was nice because we had a second spring. Flowers, leaves, some scantily-clad women, and of course the lambs.
