Storms forecast for NYC; would you commute in this weather?
See below. Forecast for my 8AM commute is 44F + rain + wind, 6PM commute will be similar.
I'd like to bike tomorrow but I don't think I'm going to commute in this - I don't have foul weather gear to keep me dry(ish) in the rain.
Would you commute in this weather, and if so, what would you wear?

I will most likely do a split commute ie; ride the Four miles down to the train and then the reverse on the way home.
If that's the case, a full eVent outfit with Windstopper balaclava and Amfib gloves will be the order of the day.
Wind is the worst. Most of that will be happening while I am at work. There will be trees down and power outages in my neighborhood.
I'm betting that the big stuff will already be on the ground before 12AM when it's time to call it a day.
Still debating the pros and cons though.

Hell no. Then again, I don't ride if it's raining at all. Getting caught in rain is one thing. But setting off in it? No thanks.

I agree. According to the Doppler, it's not raining now in Boston but the sky looks ominous. I just got a new chain and cassette this weekend and the bike is riding like silk. I hate to mess it up with road grime.

That same storm is going to be in Boston on my commute home (add darkness), and I'll be out there riding my bike.
But my commute is short, so that makes things easier.

As for the OP, would I ride? I *have* ridden in such weather but have lost my taste for it. Cold rain is the worst. Cold rain plus wind is worse still!
Edit: FTR, took the subway today.

55mph crosswind would drive me nuts, if it didn't push me off the road or into traffic first. I'd cancel class and stay home, or take the bus in.

Yes, I rode in this morning. Other than a wet foot that got chilled, the ride was uneventful.
This afternoon, when the winds are suppose to pick up, on the way home I'll just hunker down in the drops. I think I'll have a tailwind. If so, I'll sit up a bit.
Here's the prediction for my area:

Doesn't look too bad to me. The headwinds and sleet in the face were a little irritating yesterday, increased my commute by about 8 minutes, but nowhere near where I'd even think about calling it off.
I think I would call off or delay a ride so far only for snows in excess of 6 inches that are not yet plowed, hail bigger than about pea sized, really fierce lightning storms (like, very close strikes happening every few seconds, very rare around here, I haven't seen one in years) and tornados. So far the only one of those that has actually happened was the snow in excess of 6 inches. And for that, I just stayed home and telecommuted.

Meh. I'm planning on riding. I wear my usual cooler-weather gear. Long leggings (tights, if you will), long-sleeve jersey under high-viz jacket. Gloves. Headband for ears. The cold doesn't bother me much though. Also, most of my ride is on a MUP, so I don't worry about stupid cager tricks.
Our forecast says:
Windy. Snow during the morning will give way to snow showers during the afternoon. Temps nearly steady in the mid 30s. Winds WSW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 70%. 1 to 3 inches of wet snow expected. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

I took the subway this morning. Call me a wimp, but I'm warm and dry, and will be on the way home too.

It's raining as I type this. I don't have fenders, nor rain pants. I wanted to ride in this morning but I'll be a sopping mess. I'll drive!

No, I would not unless I had a MUP or quiet country road that went all the way to work. With the distraction of cold rain, and the lower visibility of overcast skies I just don't think I want the additional risk of a crosswind gust throwing me into a different lane. Live to ride another day.
