Bike the vote! Ride to the polls!

http://www.vabike.org/bike-the-vote-ride-to-the-polls/

There's no better chance to show everyone how many of us cyclists there are!

politicalgeek 11-04-08 06:42 AM

I would, but my polling place is about a 5 minute walk.

10 Wheels 11-04-08 06:46 AM

I will ride to vote after a 80 miles ride today.

keiththesnake 11-04-08 06:48 AM

Yeah. That's a good idea. My polling place is just down the block, though. Won't my neighbors just think I'm a big ***** for having to ride my bike down the block instead of walking?

Oops. I meant to say, "wussy." Really.

cdalefan 11-04-08 06:52 AM

I rode and took my bike inside and parked it the back of the room. Then, I stood in line in lycra tights, road shoes, and long sleeve jersey.

Everyone knew I was there---

paulwwalters 11-04-08 06:57 AM

I had to go over the hills and far away to the courthouse to absentee, which required a car.

DataJunkie 11-04-08 07:11 AM

Sorry but I voted a couple weeks ago. I suppose I could hang out at the polling place. ew

Bat22 11-04-08 07:22 AM

Supposed to be a heavy voter turn out. Would make a lot of
sense to get through the parking lot. One of referendums
on the state ballot is minor pot possession. Cop takes
pot away but you don't get charged.

SouthFLpix 11-04-08 07:29 AM

That was my plan. I figured the parking would be much easier, but then I started hearing rumors of 3hr waits, so I just voted absentee.

PaulH 11-04-08 07:33 AM

Just did. The line was about an hour long at 6:10 AM. With that many people, I can't even imagine trying to drive there and find a parking spot.

Did it absentee style. I did ride to the mailbox to drop it off.

Mine to.

Map tester 11-04-08 08:18 AM

Rode to vote, could have walked. Saw another bicycle there, but didn't see the cyclist. Voting took 1 hr 10 minutes from getting in line to walking out the door. Good to see all my neighbors there, doing the civic duty thang.

littlefoot 11-04-08 08:27 AM

Convicted Felon here I can't vote... but I put out Nader/Gonz signs at polling places with my bike all morning.

zpl 11-04-08 08:30 AM

I just got back from biking to the polls. I commute by bike a couple of days per week but don't usually use my bike for short errands. But I made an exception for today. The sign holders at the polls thought it was pretty novel and were happy to watch my bike for me while I went inside.

oakback 11-04-08 08:34 AM

I biked to the polls, on my way to work this morning. Nobody really seemed to care or notice. There were a lot of folks standing around outside, so I just leaned it against a bench outside.

I think more people noticed that I wasn't dressed for the weather. Most folks had long sleeves and such, some with jackets, I was wearing gym shorts and a sleeveless shirt. I just as easily could have been a jogger, though.

But I voted!

Or how few.

JeffS 11-04-08 08:42 AM

Without a car, I didn't have a choice.

Well... had it been pouring down rain today instead of just a light rain I would have considered driving my wife's car, as I was expecting to have to wait outside to vote. Instead, I walked right in.

dynodonn 11-04-08 08:54 AM

No problem here, I've been riding to the polls for many years since my polling place is only a few blocks off my regular commute home.

mihlbach 11-04-08 09:40 AM

I didn't bike...my polling place is across the street.

ItsJustMe 11-04-08 09:50 AM

It's 4 miles to my polling place, then 10 miles to work from there. I voted this morning. One friend has worked it every election there for 40 years. He says I'm the only person who has ever arrived there on a bike in his memory. So I don't think we'll be making much of an impression.

I did park a lot faster than most of the people; some were having to park hundreds of yards away on the street.

zac 11-04-08 09:53 AM

I did on my way to work. In full kit wearing this:

Actually had a request for the button for the son of one of the volunteers, which I thought was cool. I took my bike right in with me (fire station) but they know me as I haven't failed to vote since I was eligible, plus I have taken my bike in before, so it's no big deal.

I vote to ride, and I ride to vote.

I rode to the polls (3 blocks from my house) on my way to work.

I don't know if any one noticed or cared, but that's never been my motivation for riding anywhere.

baldsue 11-04-08 10:20 AM

I rode and people at the front of the line said that if anyone ever hit me while I was on the road, that person should get the death penalty because I'm so visible. I try.:o

You'd think half of the people in line never before saw a bicycle or a bicyclist in tights wearing a helmet with a flashlight attached.

But now they have!:D

Same here [walked two block to polling place]. Arrived at 6:30 with six in line. I brought a folding chair and a book and had a pleasant wait on a beautiful fall morning. I would not ride my bike anywhere I would have to leave it out of my sight; I don't even carry a lock for that reason.

I then walked home and got my bike. Normally I commute to work at about 5:00 AM, so riding at 8:00 AM was not as pleasant, but God Bless America, I am a road warrior, not a sunshine patriot ;-)
