If so it's in the top turn of the S curves near Spout Run/Giant/BigWheel Bikes... Sitting on one of the posts. I found it in the trail, felt wrong opening it up or taking it with me, here's hoping you came back for it

I was the one who picked it up out of the middle of the S downhill and put it on the posts so no one would hit it and take a spill. Kept looking for someone coming back until I hit the Veitch St turn off.

Sweet! Now I don't have to look in the weeds twice a day going by and can concentrate on that trail!

Cool on getting the GPS back. I got my phone back yesterday, someone turned it in a the cop shop. I didn't even know I'd lost it, I forgot to zip up one of the pannier pouches.

Just out of curiosity... How do you lose a pannier and not realize it's gone?

You'd have to see the place it was lost. It's a double switchback tight S curve that's also a huge hill. You're usually concentrating so hard at not pinging off one of the side rails or crashing that you're just relieved to get through. It's a truly ugly spot. This morning add a light mist rain and wet leaves to the mix. I understand how it was lost as many others here that ride it will also.

the owner of the pannier probably got carted off in an ambulance. Pics of the switchback would be good.

A little hard to make out through the trees on Goggle Satellite, but this is about it.
https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2381361
The steep part tilts up to 15% on the inside curve.
edit - smoothed it out abit

Jesus Christ, how many forum members are using this same trail? I don't even know anyone from the same city here...
(I guess the forums are generally for Americans, but, well, commuting's commuting. )

That looks like fun, we don't have anything like that around here. Just roads and bike paths that are really just wider sidewalks with road paint. Very bumpy.

Heh - Cool pics. Reminds me of when I lived there. (Another lifetime...)
My wife lived on Veitch before she met me.
Awesome that the GPS was returned.

Yes that spot on the Custis Trail is uniquely treacherous. I saw this article a few days ago in a free local newspaper. Although it is not totally clear where on the Custis Trail the accident occurred, I'd wager there is a pretty strong chance it was at this spot. If even the VP of the League of American Bicyclists wipes out there, we should not feel so bad, here's the full link and the article itself:
https://www.expressnightout.com/conte...its_called.php
Trail Blazer: There's a Reason It's Called FallELIZABETH ****R HESITATES when asked for tips on biking in the wet and leaf-strewn conditions of the season. She's vice president of the League of American Bicyclists, but she took a spill a couple weeks ago on the Custis Trail when conditions were slick. "It was 100 percent my fault," she admits. "I was passing someone on a curve, which is A) A bad idea because you can't see around a curve, and B) I was trying to get back over with my wheel turned, on a paint stripe. It was wet and I was worried about the jogger I was passing."
On paved trails, paint stripes can be slippery when dry. On wet days, they should be approached cautiously. And as fallen leaves dot trails, don't forget they can take away traction. Stay alert, monitor your speed, and avoid turning your wheel on a slippery surface. If you need to pass someone, try to wait until you get to a straightaway.
Another condition that blows is unexpected wind gusts. Can you lean in to avoid being blown over? Yes and no. "You have to counterbalance. It's tricky. If the wind stops as suddenly as it started, you could fall from that." Sheesh. "Slowing down is best." Just make sure you're moving fast enough to avoid floppin' over. That would be no way to fall.

We really do need to do something about that damned S-curve. That thing is terrible.
For the folks with morbid curiosity about our local death trap, one thing that isn't immediately apparent from the photos is that, in addition to the tight turn, tree debris, rocks, and slippery painted stripes...the thing is also banked the wrong way, especially the upper turn. There's really nothing holding your wheel on the ground, so the slightest slip and you're eating asphalt.
I'll happily admit I wiped out there - and I was trying my damnedest to be careful, too.
