I will stop for cyclists that need help, and or any person needing help in an emergency.

So you wouldn't stop for even a $100 bill on the ground?

Square & Compas 11-12-08 04:59 PM

I would stop for any amount of money, especially on a commute. It would go toward the money I am saving/making back vs. using my motor vehicle, about $0.13 a mile.

AndrewP 11-12-08 06:27 PM

I pick up lots of stuff in Toronto - visegrips, wire cutters, screw drivers, coins, case of beer, bungees. Saw lots of shoes - I find it hard to understand how somebody would not notice that they didnt have a shoe on. Never see anyhting to pick up on the Montreal streets.

777arty 11-12-08 06:55 PM

i stopped for a marble once. so a dime, ya. i'm broke.

i've found cash in the bushes near the mall. my thought is after the lot is cleared at night the wind blows everything into the bushes at the edge, so i keep an eye out as i roll by.

the latest things i rolled by for a weeks now (not to be picked up): :commute: a condom wrapper, then about a quarter mile down the road, a condom (must have been a quickie), next to a sippie cup. :wtf:

ken cummings 11-12-08 09:46 PM

I go for quarters anywhere except out in the middle of an active intersection. Dimes only if it is safe and clear to stop. Nickels and pennies only if they are where I am stopped anyway. Scored a $20 once on an MUP.

downtube42 11-12-08 10:04 PM

I'd definitely stop for it, on principle. But be forewarned about picking stuff up - if it turns out to be junk you can't throw it down because you'd be littering.

As a backyard welder I'm always keen to recover dropped steel materials. 'Course, on a commute that's a cargo-capacity issue so if possible I'll chuck it into the pucker brush for storage and put it on my list to swing past on my next cager venture in the vicinity. If there's no place to 'store' it by the roadside, well it's just sacrificed with a sigh. My current (and semi-permanent) bike rack in my pick-up truck is contrived of found steel. Dime? Nah.

I once saw a little shivvering scottie by the road so I went back home, told the boss I'd be late, ditched the bike, got the truck, and picked up the little fella'.

LOL! The main road leaving the navy base I work on runs between #1 and #18, and there is ALWAYS at least one ball against the curb along the way. "Is that a ProV1 or a TopRock?" Hmmmmm. So far I've opted to maintain my momentum and keep going.:)

First off I'd probably not notice it, I'm looking ahead or around me not at the ground.

Seconly, and If someone left a 59cm Serrotta Ottrott with Full Campy record carbon group on the side of the road I wouldn't take it either.

It's not mine. I do not take it. Simple. Period. End of moral dilemma.

atbman 11-13-08 05:44 PM

Probably thrown from a car at someone wearing a saffron robe who sang, "Buddha, can you spare a dime"

Foofy 11-18-08 10:40 AM

I'm always on the lookout for money, cans/bottles, and other cool stuff. Why not? I love money, and it's so easy to on a bike to turn around and stop for something. 50-200 dimes can get you a good garage sale bike, beer, food, and other pleasant stuff. And all you have to do is stop/turn around while biking. More fun making money that way than going to work.

Little Darwin 11-18-08 10:52 AM

I say pick it up... you are spending a lot of mental energy thinking about it. Pick it up and free your mind for the next task. ;)

Neil_B 11-18-08 10:57 AM

I found ten dollars when pulling out my winter cycling gear from storage. I don't remember missing the money. :)

Yes, I'd stop for the dime.

Yes, I'd stop for the dime.

The dimes could come from one of the Nannys from A&S. They sometimes post about dropping dimes on other cyclists and motorists.

cyclokitty 11-18-08 11:22 AM

I never find anything when I ride my bike, but I wouldn't stop to pick up a dime. Now puppy... I'd stop for a puppy or a kitten.

Bat22 11-18-08 11:35 AM

I have pulled car parts off the road. Bumpers, tires, shopping carts etc.
Hazards to other cars. I have a curse of Catholic school education.:)

jpdesjar 11-18-08 11:39 AM

From all the wind the other day there were all kinds of recycling bins in the road, one was in my path while running so I placed it back on the lawn only to see it across the street again later that day.

Quickbeam 11-18-08 11:50 AM

No.

Bat22 11-18-08 12:01 PM

The power of Christ may compel me, but I draw the line at garbage barrels on windy days.
Came across a raccoon one morning that had been grazed by a car. I got a box from a
nearby dumpster and scooped the poor guy in it. Put the box up on the sidewalk, called
the cops and continued on to work.

To all those peolpe who said they would not stop for a dime....Are you ex-roadies? I'm an ex-roadie (semi current) and I have found getting past the GO-GO-GO mentality of road riding one of the hardest things to get past as a commuter. I am slowly learning to take my time, stop for lights, stop to enjoy the view, pick something off the road, etc....It's taking some time but I'm getting there. So...yes, I might stop for a dime.

I also fall in that ex-roadie camp, and find it hard to slow down. I have found a group that takes it
time more and seems to just enjoy riding and seeing things(and breakfast) :)

Lennysody 11-18-08 12:31 PM

This isn't exactly bike related, but one time I was driving on the highway and saw a tacklebox on the side of the highway....thought it may be empty, but actually just hit the jackpot...musky-walleye baits up the ying-yang...quite a roadside treasure.. and no there was no contact information

Pig_Chaser 11-18-08 01:03 PM

I'm polish and i still wouldn't stop for a dime despite what jokes you may have heard to the contrary.

seagullplayer 11-18-08 02:13 PM

If you had a metal detector you would dig 10 inches of froozen ground to get to it, and show it off when you found it like it was something other than a clad dime.

rugerben 11-18-08 02:20 PM

Found money gets picked up and thrown in a charity box.

yes, I'd pick it up. Then give it to a person/cause that needs it more than I do.

You're coming up on that same dime you've seen on the ground for about a week before... you know it's going to be there. Do you stop to pick it up?

No, I would have probably picked it up the first time I saw it.

schu777 11-19-08 08:53 AM

Well, yesterday on the commute into work, I found $1.76 in change on the corner of my route...I always stop for all change on the road. Yesterday on the ride home, I noticed some more change further out in the road, but didn't stop for it due to the amount of traffic. I did stop this morning and it's another $.26 - so $2.02 in two days...hmmm...

For those that don't stop, don't stop, I'll be by later to get it. My only other find for the route I take is a bike pump that I'm guessing someone dropped on the way in and didn't realize it. Haven't tried it, but it appears to work. I'm still looking for that wallet on the road...

I've been stimied by this dime now for a week and the pedestrian in me is saying "pick it up fool!" and the cyclist in me is saying "don't listen to that stupid pedestrian side of you... wait for a quarter." I don't even think I would stop for a quarter. How about everyone else...

Oh... and for people who ask about what we think about on our commutes... this is pretty standard for me.

Would you stop to pick up an orange pylon that got knocked into the road?
I would and did.

I don't usually stop for the money, mainly because I figure there's someone else that needs it alot worse than I do. Oddly enough, I usually see the coinage mainly around the gas station entrances. Ironic, eh?

Spanky-G-Master 11-19-08 10:44 AM

I would pick it up and post it in the lost and found section of our local craigslist.

In more seriousness, I've picked up bikes, a trainer, kids toys, clothing anything else I find either to get it back to the owner or to liberate from front yards if its donning a free sign.
