Why I'm not commuting tomorrow

Respiratory infection, and I'm on antibiotics.

Forecast temperature for tomorrow AM departure: 24 degrees

I think, for health sake, I'll pass.

uke 11-17-08 06:22 PM

I rode today in 20s and 30s. Not much fun. Tomorrow, I might wear two hats instead of one.

What makes it less fun is my weakened immune system and ongoing lung/airway issues.

So you're staying home? Too sick to ride... too sick to work.

Never too sick to work.

I posted this yesterday to a discussion thread entitled "Inspiration for commuting"

Now that I feel good, I want to ride. Indeed, yesterday I had an epiphany that though I have assiduously avoided riding in the rain, I decided that since I already have a "beater bike" I should ride through this last obstacle to a total cycling commute*. In fact I've just returned from a shopping trip to buy rainwear.

Furthermore, since the Holidays are coming up, not only am I going to resume commuting, no matter what the weather, I'm going into training mode (diet, proper sleeping, etc.) for the Holidays.

Thanks for the oppportunity to put it in writing.

*Actually my commute is a half commute since I take my bike home on the commuter rail; I leave work pretty late to rev up for the return ride.

Today's riding temp was about 34 degrees.

Hopefully, this too shall pass. Get well soon.

Your coworkers must love you come cold/flu season.

It will, with time. Thanks for the well wishes. I was looking for some affirmation that a dedication to my health supersedes a dedication to bicycle commuting, and I think (possibly incorrectly?) that you provided that.

I'm the IT guy. They love me year-round.

HTFU.

(it had to be said.. ;))

I haven't had a respiratory infection in a long, long time (knock on wood); I might do the same as you if it happens to me.

bdcheung 11-17-08 08:04 PM

I'm on 'roids, that's about as HTFU as one can get!\

DataJunkie 11-17-08 08:31 PM

I fail to see how a respiratory infection is something you can give to coworkers.

Get well soon. :)

Nothing wrong at all with taking it a little easy on yourself when you've got an infection. You don't want to knock yourself completely out to adhere to some blind idea of what's hard or not.

Now, I just got in from my evening work commute. It was 34 when I left for work in the dark; and it felt even colder when I returned tonight. I've got to find my gloves. Fingerless gloves don't do the trick when it's chilly and wet.

I think a bad cold would be enough to keep me from commuting on the bike. So far, so good.

Get well soon.

bhchdh 11-17-08 08:55 PM

Heal well, ride on.

nahh 11-17-08 08:57 PM

Probably a good idea to not push yourself when you're sick. If there's no snow on the ground tomorrow i'm biking, forecast temp in the AM is 25. We'll see how it goes, it'll be the first below 30F commute.

No, that's about as stupid as one can get. I have experience with those nasty drugs so I should know.

DataJunkie 11-17-08 09:25 PM

As do I and I have a different opinion. Shall we thumb wrestle over it?

They could be prescribed for some medical condition or injury, and not just to bulk up or whatever.

Anabolic steroids are not the same as corticosteroids. Body builders use anabolic. Corticosteroids like prednisone can help open airways.

A common cold, for example, is a respiratory track infection. So is the flu. So is strep throat. You can easily give all that to people.

The OP says he's on antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to fight bacteria. Since bacteria can be spread to other people, what he has is contagious (although, not knowing what it is, one can't say just how contagious).

bdcheung 11-18-08 04:45 AM

i can't believe people think I'm on anabolic steroids!

I'm on Zitrhomax and prednisone.

Prednisone some nasty stuff. I took it for a long time. I actually got a moon face from it. I am on another immunesupressant so if I even have an itchy throat i head for the car.

Chris516 11-18-08 06:26 AM

The only problems I have with riding in cold weather really, is the wind. Todays' temp won't be higher than 37 but, the highest it will feel like is 28.

I have to go out in this weather so, I will just bundle up by wearing skiing gloves, t-shirt w/ sweatshirt and, warm socks. I will still wear shorts, to help counter-balance the heat produced from, wearing the gloves n' the sweatshirt.

When I lived in Minnesota, the only weather that would keep me from biking was, the rain or, the snow.

Cheers

Take a sick day. Give your body a break. That's nothing to play with.
