So after reading about bike commuting and seeing how some of you guys do it, it got me thinking about whether or not I could do it. I currently live 24 miles from where I work, so that's a 48 mile round trip. And in the hilly area of Utah that I live in and the fact that I have to be to work at 5:30 in the morning, that seemed a little rough for me. It didn't stop my train of thought though. I started looking at buses that run by my house to see if I could take a bus to light rail and then light rail to work. That would've worked, but the buses don't run at 4 and 5 in the morning even though the trains do. Now to option 3, drive to the light rail station, park, ride the train to the nearest stop and bike over to work. That seemed to be the perfect idea, but on the way home I might have to wait awhile, because they only allow 2 bikes on the front and rear of the car at a time. Usually the trains are too full at that time of day and bikers are forced to wait for the next train. That still didn't stop me. Option 4... Drive to the light rail station (only 8 miles from my house), ride to the stop nearest to where I work, and bike the rest of the way to work, but only on a foldable bike. I started looking at foldable bikes and found that I don't need anything super fancy and expensive beings that I only have to ride about a mile each way from the train to where I work. I've decided to buy me a foldable bike, that way I don't have to worry about getting my 29er on and off the train. This will allow me to shave 32 miles a day, 160 miles a week, and 640 miles a month off of my drive. That is, if I do it every day, which is very possible, even in the snow. So thanks for all of your ideas and encouragement.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I can ride the train for free because I work for the transit authority. Pretty sad that I work for public transportation for almost 4 years and haven't ridden to work once.

I've kept a folder in my bike stable for years- I love 'em. They're great for on the train commutes and for anything less than 20 miles at a time I really don't notice all that much difference- what are you gonna get?

Well done, and pretty soon you'll be bored with just riding one mile and will want to go further... You could get a beater to ride from your house to the rail station and leave it there all day, or even ride the whole way on the folder - I did a ten mile round trip on my Brompton today, mostly on 60mph roads with no shoulder. On the way home, I bought some more lights.
