Juxtaposition

I took this photo this morning after a friend of mine and I pulled up to the coffee shop and parked.

Similarities:
* Human powered
* Capable of carrying a load
* Inexpensive to operate

Differences:
* Number of wheels
* Stigma
* My panniers are seriously jealous

The shopping cart is piloted by a man named William, who I've had the joy of talking to a few times in the last couple of weeks. He's an interesting guy and I don't quite know what to make of him yet. I'm not sure why he opts to spend time in an expensive coffee shop, but I guess it's not like he's saving cash for that new bedroom set he saw at the furniture outlet. I'm not the kind to judge, but this is an interesting photo for a compare and contrast.

Hummn! Could it be that William is suffering from mental illness and isn't following the norms that would take him to where homeless are normally found??

William's just continuing to hang out where he used to study *before* he got his degree and hit the job market.

Ahhh, but could it be the people on the bikes are suffering and hanging out with the homeless? Slippery slope here

Back in the 90's, our provincial gov't slashed funding to healthcare, and anyone who wasn't spraying blood got turned into the street. Okay, it wasn't quite that bad, but a large number of people in long-term therapy for a variety of mental illnesses were turned out. Nobody knows how many for sure, but I've heard estimates that ~2000 were "released from care". Couple that with a boom/bust in the local energy biz, and sights like the one above are common here. However, the jobless usually get punted from the coffee shops immediately, since they're usually panhandling. Other differences:
- the blue bike would be a whiz-bang $3k full squish that sees dirt once a month
- the road bike would be a whiz-bang $4k carbon racer or a $500 tarck bike

Must be nice to live some place where you don't have to lock your bike (or your shopping cart) when you run in for a latte.

Well, we were all sitting inches away at the bar that's right there on the other side of the glass. William included.

I've seen some dude stroll around on the road with his shopping cart + roller blades. It was odd, but seemed fast enough.
