Bike Forums - 5 year commuting stats

For some crazy reason, I have been keeping daily stats of my commute from Center City Philadelphia to Great Valley / Malvern (suburbs, 26 miles away). You may have seen my posts from previous years. I now have FIVE years of data, and here are some updated stats.

For the first few years, I only did a "once weekly" bike commute during the summer season, taking my bike on the train (SEPTA) in the morning and biking 32 miles back home in the afternoon.

What's different this year is that since about May of 2007 I have been doing a folding bike + Amtrak commute as often as possible and really is my default commute. So the "trailing year" stats are quite different than the overall ones.

For the past year I managed to drive only 22% of the time and BIKE more than 2/3 of the time!

Trailing year (November 2007 thru November 2008) = 424 one-way trips

Amtrak: 76.4%
Drive alone: 21.7%
Septa: 1.9%
BIKE ON TRAIN: 68.6% (overlaps Amtrak/Septa numbers)

TOTAL commutes (one-way) over 5 years = 2153

Drive alone: 57.2%
Amtrak: 22.4%
Septa: 15.4%
Bike: 1.7% (32 miles back to Philadelphia)
Carpool: 3.3%
BIKE ON TRAIN: (overaps Amtrak/Septa numbers) 22.5%

DISTANCE: (53 miles per round trip drive)

Miles Driven: 32622
Miles "Not driven" by taking train/bike/bus: 24433
Total biked miles: 3056 (8.5 miles when I take Amtrak/septa, 32 miles biking Malvern back to CC).

Miles Driven: 2438
Miles "Not Driven": 8798
Total biked miles: 1237

WEATHER AND INCIDENTS

103 (4.8%) "bad weather" trips (heavy rain, snow)
104 (4.8%) "incident" trips (accident, late train, or other problem which causes me to reroute or have a longer commute).

"Incidents" are around 7% of driving trips and only about 2.5% of train trips.

TIME

Overall average driving time 50.10 minutes
AM drive time average 42.76 minutes
PM drive time average 57.52 minutes

AM Bike+Amtrak is 55-60 minutes

PM Bike+Amtrak is 65-75 minutes
I've spent 2244 hours, or 93 "24 hour days", commuting over the past 5 years.
