trunk bag with shoulder strap
I want to get a bag that has the best of both worlds - trunk bag when on the bike, messenger bag when off the bike.
Basically I want a trunk bag that has an easy to use/store shoulder strap to use when off the bike.
Any recommendations?

I don't know about trunk bags, but many panniers have this feature. You might have better luck looking in that direction.

Check out the sunlite brand bags. I bought one, although small at 480ci, it does have a shoulder strap.
I think all the models have them. Check them out at www.sunlitecycling.com

Axiom Columbus or Magellan models both have this... The Columbus has built-in panniers, the Magellan doesn't.

I have a Trek interchange rack and trunk bag and the bag does have a shoulder strap. The only thing is it has a fairly stiff bottom, so not real flexible, and wonder if that would be an issue with most trunks.

think the Lonepeak bags all allow for the use of a shoulder strap. https://lonepeakpacks.com. Made in the USA as well.

It isn't cheap, but the Arkel Tailrider has an optional shoulder strap.

The Topeak trunk bags have a convenient slide on/off with a quick release hook. I can attach or remove my bag within 2 seconds, which is way faster/easier than having to deal with velcro or straps.

I got one of these (just arrived, won't have a chance to mount it 'till the holiday). It came with a (removable) shoulder strap. Waterproof zippers, a couple of internal pockets (nothing huge), and a great big main compartment. Size-wise think big laptop bag or small carry-on rollie. Mounting bracket has bars that allow panniers as well.
