A Few Commute Pics

I took my camera to work today because I was going to test out a lens and probably buy it after work, but the guy sold it to someone else before I got the chance... punk.. well, on the way to work, I did some "from the hip" shooting while riding. Here are a few from the ride. (Nikon D200 if anyone's interested)

Jumbo's Clown Room is a bikini bar (strippers that only go down to bikinis)

Stopped at a red light, the exit for the freeway always has a couple beggars in the mornings.

This used to be a grocery store.. they've been working on it forever

This homeless guy is always there without fail. I haven't seen him up from that spot ever.. except once when he was taking a leak, but usually he's sitting in the chair with the Titleist umbrella

Here I am on the bike lane passing some stopped cars.

cool urbanesque commuter pics, except... where's the snow?

JoeyBike 12-13-08 09:53 AM

Nice pics. As much as I like all those beautiful MUP pics (jealous), it's nice to see the gritty side of towns too.

bhop 12-13-08 01:42 PM

Heh.. I didn't realize i'd only put up the nicer riding pics. The bike path is actually only about 25% or less of my ride. Most of it looks similar to this. As you can see, still not too horrible.

The cars on the right ahead here are idiots.. this spot isn't even two lanes, people just "have" to go around since the lane is wide enough for two cars to fit, and then, to my amusement, get blocked by the people taking a shortcut through the parking lot on the right trying to come out into traffic.

How in the world did you hold a D200 while riding? Do you have some kind of wrist/hand grip on that?

Jealous of your aurora! But I've always been underwhelmed by Hollywood Pro bikes.

Yes, I've had it since the end of June and love it.

I have the strap around my neck and shoulder, the same as my messenger bag, so it rests against my chest. In this position it's easy to aim and click the shutter with my thumb while keeping one hand on the handlebar. Of course, since i'm just shooting without looking, a lot of the shots aren't useable. Either out of focus or nothing good in the frame.

Hollywood Pro... well, I don't really have much of an opinion myself. I bought my bike there because I wanted a Jamis and they were the only dealer I could find in town at the time. They changed their hours recently to closed on Saturdays, which pretty much guaranteed I won't be able to go back because it clashes with my work hours. *shrug* I actually live closer to Orange20 bikes, so maybe i'll go there. It seems to have a hipster type image, but I bought my Bailey Works bag there and the guys working were super friendly and helpful.

The area looked familiar and the intersection of Sepulveda and Santa Monica gave it away. I used to live in Culver City on Sawtelle, just south of the Venice Bl. exit. I used to ride from there to just the other side of LAX. (I went through the Sepulveda tunnel once or twice, decided it was craziness and started riding around the airport on the beach side. Yeah, I used to commute on the now infamous Ballona Creek MUP.)

Thats just cause you're in Silverlake.

Hipsters are harmless, like pigeons

It's always nice to see pics of our fellow riders. I have a mix of urban and suburban commute but like the city part of the ride much better. There is always something happening in the city.

Man, that looks too warm for this time of year. It's the only time it would be nice to live in a warmer climate.

no motor? 12-15-08 05:57 PM

Nice pictures, nice change of pace from the snow up here.

Cool pics, I always like seeing how everyone elses commutes are.

What is it with bike riders and DSLR's, I've noticed that here.
I have a Rebel XT, Sigma 17-70 and a 50mm 1.8.

Dunno, Personally I've been into photography since the late 80's, even almost became a pro after I got out of design school, but went into graphic design instead. I actually do shoot some events for some websites now, but am not quite a pro since it's just for fun and free event media passes. I still shoot a lot of film too.

It seems like a lot of the 'creative' friends I have also have bicycles too, so maybe there's some relation to riding bikes and creativity. :D
