(yeah, 600 bucks isn't a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, but back then, and to a penniless college student, it was a MAJOR investment)

Thats alot more sentiment than I have with any of my bikes since I haven't had them that long. I am getting attached to my Trek Commuter though. My parents still have their bikes from when they were teenagers. I'll have to fix them up one of these days.

Fizzaly have you sold it yet or could you just not go through with it? =)

The conversion is complete. I went from flat bars

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/DSCI1641.jpg

to drop bars with Tektro brake levers and Suntour barcon shifters.

I picked this Bianchi Nyala a month ago for $100 at Dream Bikes in Madison. It had the commuter look going for it but it was pretty clean looking since they rebuild all their bikes that come in. It had new tires, cables, chain, rear cassette, etc...the normal items that wear out. Besides the paint the parts look pretty spotless and brand new. Plus it's a Bianchi!
Before I dewuss'd it. lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...n/DSCF3011.jpg
How she looks today ready for anything. I still have to attach my lights and picking up a rear rack.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...n/135_0100.jpg
These help out also for winter time in Wisconsin
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...n/135_0099.jpg
I've never commuted or let alone rode in the winter time. I ride during the rest of the year otherwise twenty miles round trip to work which normally take me 35 minutes. With this beast and the weather...I'll leave probably 36 minutes before work riding this tank. Hahaha.

Doohickie 02-06-11 04:17 PM

If that bike is from the early- to mid-90s, you may want to check to see if it has the recalled Shimano cranks. Shimano is still honoring the recall, last I heard.

Henry III 02-06-11 09:51 PM

Just checked and they are FC-M291. No dice. Thanks for the heads up though. Though it's fully ready for some commuting now. $45 for my rack, rack bag, and front and rear lights from cough*walmart*cough isn't too bad. I've got less then two hundred into this monster and can't think of anything else this thing actually needs. I've never had a dedicated commuter/quasi touring rig before. It's kind of cool actually.

Doohickie 02-06-11 11:17 PM

Serious bike. Looks good.

By the way... my bike in Post 7752 had its cranks replaced by Shimano under that recall. The replacement cranks are nothing special, but they do change out the cranks plus the bottom bracket, front derailleur and the chain, so it makes for a pretty decent tuneup on an older bike. I got mine done two years ago.

Henry III 02-06-11 11:24 PM

I looked and mine weren't on the list of affected cranks. Should I still stop at my LBS and ask anyways? Their right along my way to and from work.

Doohickie 02-06-11 11:54 PM

Nah. There's nothing for them to do. If you had the FC-M290s, then they would replace them. But you already have cranks that were redesigned to prevent breakage.

Here is my bike. This picture gives me good reason to go for a ride to get a better picture during the day.

Are those butterfly trekking bars? That was the other option I had in mind for my commuter.

Yep, I got them for several reasons, first they are cheaper to outfit than drop bars(due to using the components that were on the flat bar) while offering more hand positions. I do find that I can rest my arms on the lower bar while holding onto the upper bar giving a similar effect to the drops though. The other is that I wanted the bars shifted back so I could have a little bit more up-right riding position that is more comfortable for me.

I snapped a photo of my frankenbike yesterday before I removed the crate. It was there for shopping in snowy weather when a trailer might be problematic. I didn't like it though: it made the bike sensitive to winds. I also took the studded tires off. Wow! What a difference!

Yuppers the M-50 is gone, now I have room for more stuff:) Not really though i think my g/f is ready to kill me for having the kitchen filled up with bikes for the last 6months when i told her it would only be for a week or two:)

Yey for selling stuff, but I bet you were a bit sad to see it go. My wife has been so longsuffering with all the crap in the basement and garage and sometimes the dining room. I have made some decent cash fixing and selling bikes so she realizes its help us out, but its too much. Hopefully you can keep from getting too much stuff. I just sold that Trek 3700 frame tonight so it didn't take long. I got $20 for the frame and the seat post. I am pretty much thrilled its gone.

Mardmakarm 02-08-11 12:37 PM

I finally got some budget to buy new saddle, and what i choose is Sobdeall leather saddle(Touring type).

Beautiful bikes, everyone! It makes me want to sell my car every time I look through this thread.

Here's what I just picked up, and will be putting on my Nishiki MTB:

Love the racks! How do the fenders do in rain/puddles?

unclebird 02-08-11 08:03 PM

The bamboo fenders don't seem to have the noise/rattle odf other fenders I run, and they are just wide enough to do the job.

My Commuter BIkes

My Primary commuter is built up like this:

http://rvabikecommuter.files.wordpre.../05/photo4.jpg

Stats:

1980's Lotus Eclair Touring (Cutthroats Bike Club Hand-me-down)
Shimano Bio-Pace Triple crank (not into Bio-pace but I'll replace the rings when they are shot)
Chris King Headset
35c Randonneur Touring Vittoria Rubber
Alloy Araya mismatched Rims (36 spoke) I got for cheap (like $10 I think)
Currently a Black Brooks B17 (that's a Cardiff in the photo....avoid them they suck)
Velo Orange Hammered Fenders (not in photo, I would go back to the black plastic fenders if they fit the 35c tires, more support from the stays than the VO's)
Silver Bar End Shifters
Nitto Albatross Bars
2 liter bottle cap on the lowrider mount to hold my lighting system (lights suck need to find an upgrade there)
Axiom Streamliner Rack (nice piece too!)
A Civia/Ortlieb pannier I got on discount as a returned item
Brass Bell
Cannondale Saddlebag to hold tools, patch kit, etc (rotates between bikes depending on which one I am using that day)

My Secondary Commuter/ Randonneuring Bike is:

http://rvabikecommuter.files.wordpre.../08/photo7.jpg

It's a Nashbar Toure frame from the 80's that I had powder coated with many of the little bits powder coated to match.
Yeah, that's a Nashbar front Rack to match
Mavic 36 spoke A119 Rims laced to a Shimano 105 hub out back and a 1st Generation Dura Ace Hub up front all clad in Rivendell/Panaracer Ruffy Tuffy Tires
I'm rocking a Sugino RD2 (I think) crank with Salsa Rings but I want to change out the inner ring to a 34T (I think it is 36 now)
Brooks B17
Silver Bar End Shifters
old school Shimano Canti brakes that came with the frame
a nitto Technomic Stem (not in photo)
Chris King headset
Cane Creek levers
A Mini Mag light with a 1 Watt LED I had powder coated to match when I got everything else done.....I'm liking it!

Great looking bike! Not too often you see cruiser bars on commuters. Good job, I bet it's comfy!
