:) Most days I am riding the same bikes... my Shasta is my workhorse and my Moulden is my light travelling bike so they see tons of miles between them. Yesterday I went down to the new shop and decided Reg (1955 Raleigh Lenton) needed to get out for a stretch and had just fitted up my Carradice bag which is a great carry all... have had this bike for nearly five years and like taking the old guy out on longer rides but he has served me well on many a commute. "Reg" stems from it being a "Reg Harris Road Model" and it was originally sold as a fixed gear model with an option for a three speed... at the time dérailleur equipped bikes were still rather rare if films from that era are any indication. You see a lot of internally geared bikes, single speeds, and fixed gear bicycles but very few derailleurs. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/2012reg1.JPG |

Hartsu: What type of light mount do you have on the fork? Is it custom or can you buy one?
but you can buy it separately. |
My 7 yr old has moved up to her big brother's 20" bike.

This bike we just built up for my friend about 3 hours ago out of parts consisting of an old nishiki, and old kia road bike, and parts of of my many various projects. Not the prettiest, but not the ugliest and totally usable.

It's actually a military surplus bag I picked up for $10. Waxed canvas with a water resistant liner, too. It's up for debate what the bag was used for, but the guy that sold it to me said it was an ammo bag. It holds about 1 grocery bag worth of stuff, so its pretty roomy.
All I had to do to adapt it for the bike was to cut out some of the stitching on the wide "belt" that goes around the outside to slip the seatpost through, and then use key rings to attach the upper eyeletted tabs to the seat tabs. Took about 15 minutes to modify, and works great. So far I've had about 20 pounds of gear with no problem. The straps are long enough that you can lash down a bed roll, tent or sleeping bag, etc. It's a bit of DIY engineering, re-purposing well made equipment, and ending up with something that's functional and does what you want it to do! Looks great! Alan :thumb: |
Nice! Does she "commute" to school with it?
On another note, this forum's pagination hasn't been broken in weeks -- anyone else notice? What's up with that? :-) |

http://home.comcast.net/~adrian_spidle/may06.jpg Time flies doesn't it ? My daughter was testing her new road bike last week... will be adding a rack as she wants to do longer rides and might want to use it for her school commute as well although her Raleigh 20 is her townie. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...daniracer1.JPG Last year she moved up to a 24 inch wheel on her mtb. |

Hey Bikeforums, I have not been here in a while. I have recently tarted a new job, at an office which has bike storage, as well as a gym with showers and lockers - basically it was meant for commuting by bike to. So I made the practice run last weekend on my singlespeed commuter and decided I did not like the ride in the drops, or even on the hoods, i wanted a more upright ride - so I picked up some Wald upright bars. Next step is fenders, and rack. I am excited to make the commute.
http://distilleryimage5.instagram.co...3804ec91_7.jpg I feel it looks a little silly with the short wheelbase of an 80s road bike (Fuji Ace which was found in the trash once) and the bars, but man, does it ride nice. *edit* Also, saddle angle - blah blah, still making adjustments |
It is so true, it really feels a whole lot different, turns on it feel really awesome.
Im excited for some fenders and racks - spying craigslist for good deals |

Here's my commuter bike...and my road bike...and my errand bike. Hell, it's my only bike, but I can't imagine how I got along without her. 1987 Schwinn Tempo. My boss found it in her garage, and gave it to me. It already had the back rack on it, I added the fenders and platform/clipless pedals. There's a headlight up front (I work nights, so for much of the year I'm commuting in darkness) and a red blinky mounted to the rack in back. The bag is a Biria shopper pannier, the seat bag is a cheap Bell I found at the local BBS. I have two panniers, but so far have only used one for commuting. I'd planned to use them for shopping, but seeing as how I live across the street from the grocery store, I haven't had occasion to bother with my bike when foraging. |
^Awesome boss you got there.

Thanks! I'm really lucky to have such great co-workers/supervisors at the place where I work. Upper administration can be clueless, and the patients can be obnoxious, but the people I work with make it worthwhile.
When she gave it to me, I was in the process of saving up for a Trek Navigator 2.0, which would have been adequate for errands/commuting, but it wouldn't have been able to take me on all of the adventures the Tempo has carried me on, and I likely wouldn't have been bitten by the cycling bug as hard. Also I got to spend the $400+ I'd saved on fun accessories. |

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=249327A year and a half ago it looked like i would not be able to ride again due to illness. In fact it was looking like i might not have a lota time left. Sold all my bikes.
Well things have changed and im back at it. However im retired now so i dont commute anymore but love this forum so will post here. My new ride. Marin Muirwoods 29 er. Love the steel ride and fat tires. Will probably change out the cheap crank and pedals but other than that i love it. Feels good to be on 2 wheels again. I shortened up the wide bars. I have fenders for it but i can now afford the luxury of being a fairweather rider so leave i them off mostly. Surprisingly the saddle works for me real well so Brooks not needed for now. Ive put a new but classic set of quality friction shifters(Silvers from Rivendell) on it,just my preference. Im allowed, im a old guy from the old school. Added Contac Ergon bar ends by Giant. Awesome, feels very much like being on the hoods, they are very ergonomic. Jandd seat bag. Holds enough(huge actually) for day rides or even very lite credit card touring if need be. I modified the straps it came with so it doesnt wiggle around much at all and now they dont extend down to chain stays as Jandd would have you do which i found to be too cumbersome and in the way. I have lites in bag for when needed. And of course the needed bottle cages and bell. Sorry pic coulda been larger. Its been awhile since i posted a pic. Click on it for bigger pic. |
