i get wet :)

my commute is 12 miles one way so i definitely need to bring a change of clothes. but if i have to choose between wider tires (a softer ride) and not getting muddy i'll take the tires for now at least. i am also new to this as well.

Fenders, mudguards. What do you call it?

I see a lot of pics without fenders. What do you do when it rains? How bad is it? You have to change all your clothes when you get to work?

I'm asking because I've started commuting on my road bike this summer. It is superfun, but rain without fenders worries me. This rainy morning I was back on the hybrid bike. How do you make it work without fenders?

Depends on the weather and your needs. In my hometown in South Florida, there seems to be a wet part of the year where I'm soaked no matter what and just keep a towel and change of clothes in my bag, and it's pretty reliably dry the rest of the year. Some afternoons are a little rainy, but I'm going home anyway, so I don't mind getting a little wet.

I usually keep my bag strapped to the rear rack, which makes it act as a fender, but I could get by without it.

yeah this stem is actually shorter than the one i had originally but still doesnt cut it. i was also looking for a more upright position. my road bike is a 54 and that is much more comfortable.

Try moving the saddle forward too. Makes a lot of difference in comfort in my experience.

I'm thanking GAWD I managed to get this in black, get a rear rack on it, and change out the horrid carrier handlebars. This bike flies!!!

I also have this trunk bag on the rack now, for my work clothes & stuff:

PS: I'm just glad I found a Puma bike that didn't look like THIS:

Third year of the Mule. Made sure it looks as ugly as possible.

Alu frame.
Shimano Acera groupset.
37*622 Schwalbe Marathon tyres.
Rack (looking for some panniers these days) for putting my back pack with clothes and stuff.
Nice v-brakes with rain friendly pads.
Lots of reflective tape and stuff for night riding.
Decent fenders. Metal, 60 years old.
Looking for a way to put bars a bit lower and closer (the frame is one size too big for me I guess).

Here's my commuter bike, BMC crossmachine CX02. I commute 38-70km/day, so I've tried to keep it as light and simple possible. The tyres are 32mm Schwalbe Marathons during summer and 35mm Marathon Winters when it starts to snow.

Agreed....why don't you start a "where are they now" thread.

Picked up this sweeeeeet frame (these pics don't do justice to the neon) and built it up with parts from my old commuter and an old mountain bike.

Although I prefer drop bars, I like it. Love that color.

I hate drop bars! and I love it.

the combination of spoke count/color/tire width/frame color/component color/flat bars is absolutely ****in brilliant.

literally!

Found some nice backroads on my way to the office :)

How old is your CX02? I can't find it on BMC's site. And are those really rack bolts on the seatstay?

That looks like a more practical variant of my SLX01. :thumb:

I picked up some nashbar waterproof panniers. First panniers but the freedom of no backpack was fantastic. Li picked it up from bikes direct.

I know it's not the correct side, but I don't have my camera right now so I'll get a proper pic tomorrow. It's a Miyata 414 and it serves me very well for a 30 mile round trip commute

PatrickGSR94 09-19-12 11:28 PM

What sort of times do you make on each 15 mile trip? What sort of roads?

djyak 09-20-12 12:39 AM

I love cycling in Germany, anywhere in Europe for that matter. Trying to go as car free as possible.

most of my cycling is central/southern Germany. it would be nice to get up to the northern part of the country!

you should've seen the windfarms at the Austrian/Hungarian border

I live in coastal NC so I'm on relatively flat roads. My commute is 45min-1hr depending on how frisky I'm feeling that day. I'm training to run a 100 miler in the early spring so I haven't pushed it very hard on the bike lately.

Beautiful bike and beautiful countryside. Nice handlebars, too. Thanks for posting this.
