Here are some pictures of a Surly Ogre that is my new commuter. The build includes a Rohloff IGH, Dynohub, White Industries crank, Velocity Blunt rims, Avid BB7 brakes. The frame is 24" and it came in at 36.75lbs. The build replaces a LHT and after about 300 miles I find it just as fast (or slow :) and more fun.

That's a fantastic build, but nothing could ever replace my LHT.

+1 on mrlassiter's comment... Schweeeeeet!! I'm starting to get a Brooks saddle complex

Doohickie 01-25-13 12:17 PM

I've got 6 bikes, and 5 of them have Brooks saddles. The one on the Nishiki I bought new, but three of the ones on my other bikes I picked up cheap off Craigslist, swap meets, etc.

Just picked up this 2012 GT Zum City Bike from Performance. Ship to store, they waive shipping and put it together for you. $300 + sales tax, out the door.

Single 46t chainring, 8 speed cassette 10-30t. Tires are 700 x 40c, fat enough for the trails, not bad at all on the road. I think they smooth things out a bit compared to skinny tires.

The low gear gets me up the hills that have been my bete noir up to now. That was my main worry. And the top gear is tall, tall. Plenty of steps between. I love riding this thing more than I expected to.

As you can see, I have already put some junk on it.

That's a great deal! Do you have any drive side pics?

I've heard that but I don't get it. Every Brooks I've ever had felt great from the first mile, whether it was new or used.

Thanks. I like the bike a lot. I got it cheap and upgraded it opportunistically. I probably have $500 into it, maybe $600, but it was cost twice that to replace with comparable stuff.

Got 'em. Extremely basic components, obviously.

Purchased used over the holidays from a lbs in Seattle. My first commuter (& 'serious' bike)! Just put on SKS fenders that sadly cover up the blue conti 4000s :( but they have been fantastic so far in this Bellingham weather. Clip on spoke reflectors, and planet bike lights complete it for now. No rear rack as of yet, my backpack has been fine for me. Next purcharse will probably be getting a hip bag to hold my new york ulock and flat tire needs with a strap so that i could wear it like a mini messenger bag from time to time (not sure which, open to suggestions!)

Loving this thread, and glad to contribute to it!

Updated/graded the frameset on my commuter and now the parts are hanging on a new-old-stock 2009 Spesh Singlecross. My shop buddies saw it in the "blems" section of the dealer website, but nothing is wrong with it; it's just old. It was a frameset originally for warranty (per the PN on the box) but never got used, so they put it for sale super cheap. Nabbed this for $450, still boxed with all the tubes bubble wrapped.

Wow I finally get something and its upside down lmao

bbeasley 01-27-13 08:27 PM

Finally made commuting work for me. It's a Wabi fixed gear. I've added see me lights since this pic. No fenders, I'm dry weather only and have willing SAG support at home.

I have a Nishiki Cresta I just picked up and am going to order the Brooks in brown and get some matching cloth tape in brown for it!! I don't NEED fenders, but, they DO look nice... Enjoy!

My bike had to sleep outside over the weekend while it thawed. The ride home during KHAAAAAN! was beautiful, it looked like everything was encrusted in diamonds. This is the next morning.

Since this thread is about the bike, it's an old specialized stump-jumper, and the year can probably be identified by the shimano center-pull rear brake, but I have forgotten, and I acquired it second-hand. Needless to say, not many original parts are on the bike. Single-speed with Surly rear hub and performance forte tires. Lighting is provided by a Cygolite Expilion 300 up front and a Superflash Turbo on the rack and a Princeton Tec Swerve on the bag. I add a helmet light for the deep darkness of my forested bikepath.

me either and you've confirmed my suspicion that getting a used one would save MY butt from doing the breaking!

My guess is late 80's vintage Can you get a low flap for the front fender to keep that accumulation down (like that on a Longboard)? You may already have one but hard to see it.
