Been riding this as my commuter exclusively since I got it, with my MTB being dedicated to trails until the winter hits. Featuring my first set of (free from a friend) clipless pedals! Just gotta sit down and peel/scrape off them flashy wheel decals one of these days, and swap the locking skewers from my MTB road wheels so I can actually park it at school. |

Older Trek 7.2fx. Works well enough for a 20ml round trip commute, though the platform pedals are starting to become a little frustrating. Nashbar universal rack and panniers rock. WAY better than a messenger bag... |

Nice, is a good portion of your commute on dirt?

Pics of the wife's LHT commuter.
New to her, just completed final touches to the bike. Noticed a bit of extra space in back fender while processing the photos. Also still needs a computer and crane bell moved over. Anyway, she likes it. Fits her like a glove and moved her favorite Brooks B17S Special to this ride. Tubus Rack, mostly XT hubs and drivetrain, nice bar end shifters, etc. Also 2 matching mocha Ortlieb Back Rollers, not shown. She uses a couple of different, girlier panniers in town. Or Wald folding baskets on her utility bike. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338907http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338908http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338909http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338910http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338911http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338912http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338913http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338914http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338915http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338916http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338917 |

Wow, your wife has a beautiful setup! I like the monkey pictures-- I was going to make some jokes about the size, but I see RubeRad beat me to it!

My 4th grade son's commuter bike, one of three that he uses (hybrid, mtn, bmx).
This one is truly a freaky frankenbike. Parts from about 8 different machines. Hand trued/tensioned wheels, 24" touring tires, touring cranks and rings, new grips, shifters v-brakes, 24" rack, recharge lights, etc. Still need to change to a set back seat post and different stem and bars for better fit/look. Started as a 1993 Novara Scrambler that I bought lightly used for my youngest brother, many moons ago. Rebuilt for my boy's 10th birthday in August. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338939http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338940http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338941http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338942http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338943http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338944http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338945http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338946http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338947http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338948http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338949http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=338950 |
Well that is remarkably well-executed for a Frankenbike! My vote for most beautiful crankset ever seen on a child's bike!
I have a 4th-grader myself, he'd be very envious of this rig. And to have a son that young who's already a 'bike commuter'! Way to raise 'em right! |

He also has a very nice commute to elementary school. About 4.5 miles with a very friendly, albeit hilly, bike route in our neighborhood, then bike lanes, to a dedicated 2 way cycle track that runs directly to his school. His school is also setting up bike trains to/from to encourage new/timid riders to commute to elementary school. We are grateful for his school, the cycle facilities, and the bike culture at large, here in austin. Good luck with you and yours as well. Does your 4th grader ride to school or recreationally with you ? |

Does your 4th grader ride to school or recreationally with you ? Yes, lots of recreational riding in the whole family, but unfortunately, cycle-commuting to school is not in the cards for us right now. Last week we had a special family event where we dropped off the kids at school in the morning with their bikes, and then met them on bikes after school to all ride home together, but it wouldn't work regularly. Our school is a little over 7 mi away, maybe 2-3mi of it is segregated bikeway, which is nice, but the rest is bike lanes on arterial suburban roads, with not much opportunity to divert to residential side streets. And we have three; the 4th grader is in the middle; the youngest would not be able to make the uphill trek to school in less than probably 90 min; the older two would be more like 45-60min. So since at least one needs driving, it makes the most sense to drive them all. However, I'm hoping that with cross-country practice starting after school, the two oldest may get dropped off with their bikes in the morning a few days a week, and ride home after practice (no parent, but the two of them together). As an incentive to help make them eager to ride on tired legs, I can promise to outfit their bikes with racks & bags so they don't have to ride hot & topheavy with backpacks! If I ever do, I'll be sure to come back and post pics of their commuterized bikes! But until then, this is the 4th grader's bike, and I don't think I have any pictures of the oldest's bike, but it's a Raleigh Technium PRE just like this. |
