Cool bike, basketbro. What makes a single speed freewheel special? Educate me, please.

At least in my experience, there is no mid-range SS freewheel. It's all either $10 Dacta stuff or $100 White Industries high-end parts.

i'm late to this, sorry. the differences are number of pawls, seals, bearing type, and general construction. basic shimano freewheel has 4 pawls, no seals, loose non-replaceable bearings, not great quality cog/casing. so there's 8 points of engagement, meaning more rotation is needed to engage the freewheel after coasting. dirt gets in there easily and wears the bearings down - usually the bearings are toast before the cog, but the cogs can also wear heavily from normal use. white industries freewheel has 18 pawls (i think) for 36 points of engagement, which means you go from coasting to mashing almost instantly. it uses sealed, replaceable bearings, and the cog/case is made of super-hardened nickel-plated whatever, so it will outlive your bike, and maybe you. the ride feel is amazing with the near instant engagement - really lets you ride aggressively with confidence.

Thanks, basketbro. Wow. We don't have that problem with multi-speed freewheels. I'll keep an eye out for good single speed freewheels. I shouldn't have tossed the one I had, as I need one now.

My commuting trike.

This is my 2017 Trykit trike, single speed. I've been a trike rider for 30 years and I love them. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fb1af3b5ad.jpg

spircix 05-27-19 06:31 AM

I carry my work bag, if I go shopping I have a big bag. This really is just a commuter. This is my school commuter, it's a 1992 George Longstaff tandem trike. Grtz from Belgium. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9f9dc690a7.jpg

The orange highlights seem counter-intuitive but actually work out pretty well, nice look.

This is the last year I will carry her to school :-( the bus takes over as the distance is further. My two children never took to cycling really like I did as a kid. The infrastructure here is very good but they are just like many modern kids which is a shame. Ah well.

Now that the weather has improved, I'm back to commuting on my much preferred Motobecane Grand Jubile. The smoothest bicycle I've ever had the pleasure of riding.

Nice ride man.

I'm going with the standard front seat when she's young and the rear seat at she gets bigger. For nursery runs and the like.

Also digging the STIHL cap.

My ride, bought it last year. The bike rack I lock up at is in the middle of the vegetation. They at least keep it trimmed for me.

My baby, Pretty Purple Princess Penelope. She's still a work in progress, but I've been riding her all week and loving it. I'll be posting this pic all over, because she's worth showing off.

What a peach! These seem to do purple/pink options: https://www.etsy.com/dk-en/shop/Lond...on_id=21304413 might be worth a shot? :D

Thanks for the rabbit hole. Those are some extremely nice bags; this is my favorite. I also found Ellum Bag Works with this very nifty bag. Pricey, but I can pick my color and it has zippers! You are an evil human being. Just so you know. :thumb:

My 2004 Bianchi Volpe is my favorite longer distance, faster commuter bike. I have different job sites that I ride to as very much as possible.
I usually end up riding the Volpe or my 1991 Bridgestone MB4 as they are the most fun to ride.
Non drive side, I know....

For the most part, yes. Pretty safe riding around. I'm in Carmel so very safe to ride here. I use the MUP's mainly but when I'm on the roads I don't have any issues. My D rides for her sorority bike team so she is always on the roads training. Its a bit more congested for her when she is home but she rides all over Bloomington when shes down at IU without any issues.

^^^^^^^^ There's always a Cinzano truck cruising down one of the state highways, get behind one and you can go 60 MPH.....
